Now the man of perfect virtue, wishing to be established himself, seeks also to establish others; wishing to be enlarged himself, he seeks also to enlarge others. If someone thinks I understand a lot, what difference does it make?&amp;quot; Zilu immediately responded, &amp;quot;In a country of a thousand chariots, situated between large states, with military service, and facing famine; if I were in charge, within three years, I could cultivate courageous individuals who understand governance.&amp;quot; Confucius sarcastically remarked, &amp;quot;Qiu, what is your suggestion?&amp;quot; Qiu replied, &amp;quot;I am now sixty or seventy years old, comparable to those who are fifty or sixty. If I were in charge, within three years, I could make the people prosperous, following the ways of ritual and music, awaiting the arrival of virtuous men.&amp;quot; Confucius asked Chi, &amp;quot;What are your plans?&amp;quot; Chi replied, &amp;quot;Although I cannot claim to have abilities, I am willing to learn. But what have you done to be understood?” Zilu says: „Give me a country that has one thousand chariots, a country that is situated between powerful nations, a country that is met with conflicts and natural disasters. In three years i would make those people brave and I would teach them what to do.” Confucius smiled and said: „Ranyou, and you?” Ranyou said: „Give me a territory of seven hundred li, and after three years you will see the people there doing the right things. When it comes to society norms and music, the people there will have to wait for someone marvelous.” Confucius said: „Gongxihua, and you?” Gongxihua said: ,,I don’t think I can do that as for now, but I’d love to learn - during the ceremony at ancestral temple and during an audience, where I would wear ceremonial clothes and a hat, so I could be an official of a lower rank.” Confucius said: „Zengxi?” Zengxi stopped playing zither, and while the sound of zither could still be heard, he put the instrument away and said: „My choice is different.” Confucius replied: „What’s wrong with that? Anyone can say what they want to say.” Zengxi said: „During late spring, when the spring clothes are ready, I’d like to go to the river with five or six men already having hats, or with six or seven boys. We would enjoy the rain altar and we would sing while coming back home.” Confucius said: „I agree with you.”&lt;br /&gt;

If I got down to business, in three years I would instill courage in people and teach them morality and justice.&lt;br /&gt;
The teacher smiled. - Well, Ran Qiu, where would you start?&lt;br /&gt;
Ran Qiu replied: “If I am entrusted with the management of a state of sixty or seventy square li, or perhaps a state of fifty or sixty square li, if I take over the management, then in three years I will be able to make the people rich. As for teaching decency and music, I will wait for the appearance of a noble man of true virtue.”&lt;br /&gt;
The Master turned to Gongxi Chi, asking &amp;quot;What about you?&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
Gongxi Chi replied: «I won’t say that I could handle such a thing now. Therefore, I want to learn more. I would like, dressed in ceremonial dress, to be a junior steward during sacrifices in the temple of our ancestors or when receiving other rulers. »&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;Dian, what do you want to do?&amp;quot; asked the Teacher.&lt;br /&gt;

Zi Lu answered very quickly: a country which have one thousand chariot,  between larger countries, also there is an army which want to conquer this country, then comes famine; if I can rule this country, after three years there would be very brave people, they would also act according to etiquette and justice. Confucius smiled slightly at him. Ran Qiu, what about you ? Ran Qiu said: If I can manage a country of sixty, seventy, or fifty or sixty miles, in three years I can make the people rich. As for rituals and music, if my ability is not enough, then I have to wait for the junzi. Gong Xihua, what about you ? Gong Xihua said: I can't say my ability is good, but I want to study hard.When I offer sacrifices in the ancestral temple or when princes has a meeting with the emperor, I want to wear a formal attire and a hat, and I want to be a master of ceremonies. Ceng Xi, how about you ? Ceng Xi was still playing the Se, when he finished playing he got up and said: I am unlike the three of them . Confucius said: What does this have to do with it? They only talk about their ambitions. Ceng Xi said: In late spring, when I was wearing spring clothes, me,  five or six adults and six or seven young people, after bathing in the river, the wind blows on the stage, we were returning home singing. If I were to know, what would I do?&amp;quot; Zi Lu promptly replied, &amp;quot;In a country of a thousand chariots, situated between large states, harassed by military forces, and afflicted by famine; if given the responsibility, within three years, I could instill courage and knowledge of governance.&amp;quot; Confucius chuckled at his response. &amp;quot;Qiu, what are your thoughts?&amp;quot; Qiu said, &amp;quot;At around sixty or seventy, aiming for accomplishments by fifty or sixty. Given three years, I could sufficiently meet the needs of the people, adhere to rites and music, and await the arrival of the nobleman.&amp;quot; &amp;quot;Chi, what about you?&amp;quot; Chi replied, &amp;quot;I don't claim capability, but I am willing to learn. Concerning matters of the ancestral temple, just like an assistant in a ceremony, showing solemnity, I am willing to play a minor role.&amp;quot; &amp;quot;Dian, what is your aspiration?&amp;quot; He plucked the zither gently, then abruptly stopped and put it aside.
