 Dou Tianzhang is haunted by the ghost of his daughter. The spirit of Dou E repeatedly tampers with the lamplight and continuously re-arranges the file in order to draw Dou Tianzhang's attention to the case which concerns the criminal Dou E who poisoned her father-in-law. Then the spirit of Dou E appears in front of the inspector and says that she is a ghost of his daughter. Dou Tianzhang is very surprised and feels insecure. He can't believe that his beloved daughter might have committed such a heinous crime (he does not know that Dou E was innocent). He quotes the Three Duties and the Four Virtues which he once expected his daughter to observe.

 Doctor Sailu of Shanyang county borrowed Granny Cai's money but didn't repay her. Later on Granny Cai tells her life story and says that her son married a woman called Dou E (Dou Tianzhang's daughter). Granny Cai's son died after 2 years, and his wife was widowed but stilled lived with her mother-in-law. They didn't have a lot of money so Granny Cai told her daughter-in-law she would ask Dr. Sailu to return the borrowed money. When she met him, he convinced her to go to an empty place in the village for the money, but then tried strangling her. Bo Lao and Zhang Lu'er rushed in, Dr. Sailu escaped and Bo Lao saved the woman. She explained who she is and who almost killed her. Zhang Lu'er hearing about her daughter-in-law says that she should give him her daughter-in-law as a thank you for rescuing her. Bo Lao says that Granny Cai should marry him but Granny denies and says that she will give them money. Zhang Lu'er is offended and says that he will strangle her as well if she does not give him her daughter-in-law. Granny reluctantly agrees after realizing she will be murdered and invites the two to her house.

She sings a song about being trapped in the underworld and feeling miserable. She reveals that she is the daughter of Dou Tianzhang who died because of the injustice that was done to her.
