Mit der heutigen Reisefreiheit und Mobilität, der Globalisierung des Arbeitens und selbst der Entdeckung von etwas Fremdem im Internet gibt es auch heute noch zahlreiche Erstbegegnungen, wenn auch teils auf der Micro-Ebene. Auch die Erstbegegnung mit einer künstlichen Intelligenz oder einer außerirdischen Lebensform hat die Fantasie der Menschen seit den Science Fiction-Romanen Jules Vernes bis zu heutigen Hollywood-Produktionen angeregt. So wie Kolumbus die ersten ‚Wilden’ in seinem Bordbuch beschrieb, so wurden auch die ersten Chinesen in Europa auf Kaffeekränzchen herumgereicht. Heute ist der Heiratsmarktwert westlicher Männer in China hoch. Der Reiz und die Faszination am Anderen, Exotischen, konnte aber auch schon vor diesen Begegnungen durch den Austausch von Kulturgütern (etwa über die Seidenstraße) und durch übersetzte Literatur empfunden werden. Dieses Seminar geht der Frage nach, warum die ersten literarischen Übersetzungen aus Europa ins Chinesische und die ersten aus dem Chinesischen in europäische Sprachen sich mit dem Thema „Liebesheirat vs. Zwangsheirat“ beschäftigten.
