Brief Introduction

I always think of finding quiet amid the tumult, but it is not easy. When I left Sun Yat-sen University, I thought of leaving Xiamen four months before.

The weather in Guangzhou turns warm early. On the desk is a plant I had never seen before - a piece of wood that turns beautifully green in water.

These ten pieces are copied from memory. The style is uneven, having been written over nine months in different places.

Dogs, Cats, and Mice

Since last year I hear I am an enemy of cats. In Dr. Daehnhardt's book I found the cause: the dog mistook a cat for the elephant. My true reason was simpler: my nurse said the cat had eaten my little shrew-mouse. Later I learned the nurse herself had trampled it.

Ah Chang and the Classic of Mountains and Seas

The nurse Ah Chang was a fat, short woman who left no room in bed. But once she won my admiration: she brought me the illustrated Classic of Mountains and Seas I had so longed for. Ah Chang probably left this world some thirty years ago. Kindly Earth Mother, let her soul rest!

The Twenty-Four Illustrations of Filial Piety

I want to find the blackest curse to curse all who oppose the vernacular language. Since the so-called literary revolution there have been children's books, but some would rob children of all joy.
