In the twenty years counting backwards, I had seen Chinese opera only twice. In the first ten years not at all. Both times fell in the latter ten years, but each time I left without seeing anything of note.

The first time was in the first year of the Republic in Beijing. A friend said: 'Beijing opera is the finest.' So we rushed to a theater garden. We squeezed in, but: 'Taken!' We were led to a torture-instrument-like bench. I fled.

The second time -- during the Hubei flood relief. I waited from nine to midnight for Jiaotian -- in vain. At midnight I squeezed out. Yet the night air was wonderfully fresh. That was my farewell to Chinese opera.

A few days ago I found a Japanese book: watched from a distance in the open, Chinese opera has its charm. I remembered my experience at age eleven in Pingqiao Village -- a riverside paradise with fewer than thirty households. There were many playmates. We dug earthworms for shrimp. What I most awaited was the opera at Zhaozhuang. But that year no boat could be found. It was over.

Das erste Mal war im ersten Jahr der Republik in Peking. Ein Freund sagte: 'Die Pekinger Oper ist die beste.' Also liefen wir zum Theatergarten. Wir quetschten uns hinein, aber: 'Besetzt!' Man fuehrte uns zur Seite zu einer folterinstrumentartigen Bank. Ich lief hinaus.

Das zweite Mal -- irgendwann waehrend der Hubei-Flut-Spendenaktion. Ich wartete von neun bis Mitternacht auf Jiaotian -- vergebens. Um Mitternacht drueckte ich mich hinaus. Doch die Nachtluft war frisch. Das war mein Abschied vom chinesischen Theater.

Vor einigen Tagen fand ich ein japanisches Buch: Im Freien habe chinesisches Theater seinen Reiz. Ich erinnerte mich an mein Erlebnis als Elfjaehriger in Pingqiaocun -- ein Paradies am Fluss mit nicht einmal dreissig Haeusern. Dort gab es viele Spielkameraden. Wir gruben Regenwuermer zum Garnelenfangen. Was ich am sehnlichsten erwartete, war das Theater in Zhaozhuang. Aber in jenem Jahr fand sich kein Boot. Es war vorbei.

Il y a quelques jours, je trouvai un livre japonais : vu de loin en plein air, l'opera chinois a son charme. Je me souvins de mon experience a onze ans a Pingqiaocun -- un paradis au bord de la riviere avec moins de trente foyers. Il y avait beaucoup de camarades. Nous deterrions des vers pour pecher. Ce que j'attendais le plus, c'etait l'opera a Zhaozhuang. Mais cette annee-la, pas de bateau. C'etait fini.

Am Abend standen seine Bohnen auf dem Tisch. Aber sie schmeckten nicht so gut wie die von jener Nacht.

Tatsaechlich habe ich bis heute nie wieder so gute Bohnen gegessen -- und auch nie wieder so gutes Theater gesehen.
