There is an interesting story about the correspondence. My grandfather could write well, and before he asked his friend in Kowloon to forward the letter, he went to Hong Kong and sent the letter to my father directly to his home in Yunmeng, Hubei. Of course, he did not know that we had arrived in Beijing and his letter was delivered directly to the village without being intercepted. This was during the Cultural Revolution, when letters from overseas were considered evidence of treason, but because of the good handwriting on the envelope, the production brigade accountant couldn't turn it in and kept it. My grandfather did not last until the 1990s, when my father visited Taiwan as a writer from the mainland.
		+	My uncle began to write his first letter in his life. He was very unsure of himself and kept scribbling, but then he handed the pen to a secondary school student, the daughter of the old man. As she was in the middle of writing, Mrs. Liu interjected, "Hongzhou, you don't want to be a hothead, do you?" Uncle looked at her and noticed that she had a strange expression on her face, as if she did not want him to contact his relatives on the mainland.
		+	The letters from the veterans were delivered to the hotel where the Hong Kong people were staying, along with another bag of Taiwanese currency and decades of heavy expectations. The Hong Kong people with their gold-rimmed glasses were still very polite and respectful, slowly repeating words of reassurance; the veterans were also kind enough to invite the Hong Kong people for a drink, toasting the hope that was about to be fulfilled, as if they were already overwhelmed by the weight of the coming joy.

		+	In April 1986, the Kaohsiung City Council passed a proposal asking the KMT authorities to allow foreign nationals to correspond with their relatives on the mainland "in order to console their relatives"!

		+	My uncle, a man with a backbone, undoubtedly supported all the protests. He was a member of the Kuomintang and once believed in its central government, but when the reality of corruption shattered his dreams of returning home, he left the party freely and refused to pay his dues.
		+	At the beginning of 1987, Chiang Ching-kuo instructed the relevant authorities to study the possibility of opening up the Mainland for people to visit their relatives.
		+	On 27 July 1987, Taiwan's transport and interior authorities jointly announced that they would lift the restriction imposed since April 1979 that had prevented Taiwan compatriots from using Hong Kong and Macau as the first stop for outbound travel, allowing people from Taiwan to travel to Hong Kong but not to enter the mainland. The move led to a spate of meetings between separated wealthy people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait in Hong Kong.
		+	On 14 October 1987, the Central Committee of the Kuomintang (KMT) adopted a programme for Taiwan residents to visit their relatives on the mainland, "allowing people to visit their relatives on the mainland; with the exception of serving military personnel and public officials, all those who have relatives within the third degree of consanguinity, marriage or affinity on the mainland may apply to visit their relatives on the mainland".

		+	Then, on 23 April 988, my uncle was one of the first people to visit relatives on the mainland, travelling from Taiwan to Hong Kong to Guangzhou to Tianjin and then to our home in Beijing.
		+	On that occasion, we did not allow my uncle to spend any money, and we bought him many gifts, in addition to the things we gave him. For example, a precious fox skin for the doctor at Taiwan's General Hospital for saving his life; a Lanzhou luminous cup for Mrs. Liu, who had done a great job in sending him to the hospital when he had an attack; a Yixing zisha tea set for the owner of the factory, who took good care of him; a jade bracelet for his friends at the factory, who often celebrated his birthday... ...
		+	My uncle was overjoyed to be able to repay his friends in Taipei for their love and care in his own way, as he had put together two large suitcases of gifts. However, he was also worried that the journey was too hard, going from Beijing to Guangzhou, to Hong Kong via the Lo Wu border crossing, flying to Taiwan, and then returning to Taipei from Taiwan's Taoyuan Airport to Wanda Road, "It was nighttime at Taoyuan Airport, and there were no buses, so I had to take a taxi!
