 曲阜先生乃以滿面熱誠之容，先開口道：「諸君啊，諸君，今日皆以愛國誠心參預斯會，非是鄙人無端生感，其實六十年前那裏想還有今日，又那裏敢望還有今日？（今日何日？）我們今日得擁這般的國勢，享這般的光榮，有三件事是必要致謝的。第一件是外國侵凌壓迫已甚，喚起人民的愛國心。第二件是民間志士為國忘身，百折不回，卒成大業。第三件是前皇英明，能審時勢，排群議，讓權與民。這三件事便算是我這部六十年史的前提了。三件裏頭，那第二件卻是全書主腦。

		+	這算是全部書的大綱總目了。但係我有一句話求諸君見諒。我這部講義，雖是堂堂正正的國史，卻不能照定那著述家的體例，並不能像在學校講堂上所講的規矩。因有許多零零碎碎瑣聞逸事，可喜、可悲、可驚、可笑的，都要將他寫在裏頭，還有那緊要的章程，壯快的演說，亦每每全篇錄出，明知不是史家正格，但一則因志士所經歷的最能感動人心，將他寫來，令人知道維新事業有這樣許多的波折，志氣自然奮發；二則因橫濱新小說報社主人要將我這講義充他的篇幅，再三諄囑演成小說體裁，我若將這書做成龍門《史記》涑水《通鑒》一般，豈不令看小說報的人懨懨欲睡，不能終卷嗎？

 。那時我國民決議在上海地方開設大博覽會，這博覽會卻不同尋常，不特陳設商務、工藝諸物品而已，乃至各種學問、宗教皆以此時開聯合大會（是謂大同）。各國專門名家、大博士來集者，不下數千人。各國大學學生來集者，不下數萬人。處處有演說壇，日日開講論會，竟把偌大一個上海，連江北，連吳淞口，連崇明縣，都變作博覽會場了。（闊哉闊哉）這也不能盡表。單表內中一個團體，卻是我國京師大學校文學科內之史學部。因欲將我中國歷史的特質發表出來，一則激厲本國人民的愛國心，一則令外國人都知道我黃帝子孫變遷發達之跡，因此在博覽會場中央占了一個大大講座，公舉博士三十餘人分類講演。

The exposition transformed Shanghai and its surroundings into a vast venue, marked by numerous speech platforms and daily lectures.

Not only were products of commercial arts and crafts presented but also meetings for various fields of religion and knowledge were held at that time. The event attracted at least several thousand professors, experts and tens of thousands of university students from various countries. The entire city of Shanghai transformed into an exposition venue. There was mentioned a one group of the History Department of the Literature Faculty of the Chinese university which aimed to showcase the distinctive features of Chinese history. The main goal was to instill patriotism among the Chinese and share the rich heritage of the descendants of the Huang Di.

 也有講中國政治史的，也有講中國哲學史、宗教史、生計史、財政史、風俗史、文學史的，亦不能盡表。單表內中一科，卻是現任全國教育會會長文學大博士孔老先生所講。這位孔老先生名弘道，字覺民，山東曲阜縣人，乃孔夫子旁支裔孫，學者稱為曲阜先生，今年已經七十六歲。（先生今年十六歲了）從小自備資斧，遊學日本、美、英、德、法諸國。當維新時代，曾與民間各志土奔走國事，下獄兩次。（先天下之憂而憂）新政府立，任國憲局起草委員，轉學部次官，後以病辭職，專盡力於民間教育事業，因此公舉為教育會長。
