Swiss Scene Classic Complete Trail Guide

Madison's Bombay Bicycle Club is very active, organizing several well-publicized rides each week. The Swiss Annual route is one of three that are rotated for the club's annual century ride, which takes place in late September. The ride also shows you the different character of glaciated and unglaciated terrain. On the eastern half of the loop, you'll ride over land that was covered by the thick ice sheet of the last continental glacier. The hills were rounded by the ice and lend themselves to farming. Dividing the two regions are high, rounded hills that run in parallel bands. These are the terminal moraines, the piles that mark the glacier's final push. The western half of the route is what's called the "Driftless Area," which was left untouched. The valleys are steep-sided and often wooded. Farms are tucked into valley niches or are on the rolling ridgetops. Hills are long and steep, as the process of erosion has had aeons longer to shape the land. The unglaciated countryside is a favorite of bicyclists who don't mind a challenge. the valleys wind along and always surprise you with a lovely view as you round a bend. This route has some of the finest, including Spring Valley, on the way to Mazomanie; the valleys of Blue Mound, Elvers,[http://www.watchesbo.com watchesbo], and Moen creeks,[http://www.watchesbo.com www.watchesbo.com], on the way to Mt. Horeb; and Britt Valley, between Mt. Horeb and New Glarus. The crossroads village of Paoli is probably the most popular bicycling destination in the area. Its short (15-mile) distance from Madison has a lot to do with that, but whatever the reason the beautiful old stone mill and town square are seldom without a few cyclists resting in the shade or filling their bottles at the water pump.
