What is a computer, a software application, a communications network if not a (material) representation of cerebral events?

In other words, a necessary and sufficient connection must exist between ANYTHING created by humans and the minds of humans. Even a gas pump must have a "mindcorrelate". Advertisers must continue to innovate and have fun, but remain with the taste level of this generation.'' They have hard, profitoriented reasons for doing so. Those 77 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964 are rapidly gaining spending power as they cross the threshold of middle age. Cheryl Russell, editorinchief of American Demographics magazine, notes that the buying power of 18 to 24year olds will drop more than $3 billion a year over the next ten years, to $172 billion in 1997, as the number of people in that age bracket declines by 15% to 23 million. The number of 25 to 34yearolds will fall 9% to 39 million, and this group will lose a tremendous $67 billion in purchasing power, ending up with $656 billion. Modeling agencies such as Ford and Elite have created separate divisions to satisfy the demand from cosmetics, liquor, and tobacco companies for aging boomer models.  OIL OF OLAY, now a division of Procter Gamble, was one of the first to hear time's winged chariot in its advertisements. The cosmetics company has historically marketed its skin creams and lotions to women of various ages, and in Olay's new magazine ad, a 35ish model looks defiantly at the reader and declares: ''I don't intend to grow old gracefully. I intend to fight it every step of the way.'' Another legacy of the 50plus campaigns is Madison Avenue's realization that as a person ages, his concerns change as well. Says Ken Dychtwald, president of Age Wave, a consulting firm: ''Younger people like competition, showing off, and looking good. They'd rather look good than be comfortable.'' Older boomers are starting to care about comfort, convenience, and financial security. Levi Strauss, which has been stalking the babyboom generation for nearly three decades, knows how its interests have changed. In a TV commercial for Levi's new Dockers line of casual slacks, a group of 40ish men sit around and reminisce about the good ol' days when they were young: ''In Florida we used to go deer hunting, and there hadn't been a deer in Florida in hundreds of years,'' says one guy lightheartedly. ''You took sides in political conversations,'' another recalls. The ad is loosely structured with no written dialogue and places real people, rather than actors, in familiar settings. At the conclusion a voice over reveals the name of the product. ''Real people don't sit around and talk about the brand of clothes they're wearing,'' says Stephen Goldstein, director of consumer marketing for men's wear at Levi Strauss. The pants were a hit before the ads were introduced in September, but sales have since accelerated. The company expects to peddle $40 million worth of them in 1987 and $80 million in 1988, up from $1 million in 1986. THE HOUSE OF SEAGRAM also has a new qualityoflife spiel for aging baby boomers. Says Peter Dimsey, executive vice president of marketing: ''When they were younger, they wanted to do everything differently from their parents, and they did not acquire a taste for drinks like whiskey.'' But cocktails and hard liquor are making a comeback with babyboomers, who are changing their drinking patterns. ''They have become more affluent and are intrigued with the reemergence of elegance,'' explains Dimsey. ''Cocktails and martini glasses are all vehicles for formal entertainment.'' Seagram's ads used to equate quality with the high cost of such brands as Crown Royal and Chivas Regal. More expensive is better was the message. The company's new print campaign (distillers do not advertise on TV) is still fairly snooty, but the emphasis has shifted from itcostsafortune to a social situation that aging boomers can identify with. The setting for one Crown Royal ad is a room decorated with an exquisite modern chair and a minimalist painting. ''I don't know the guy throwing this party, but he's got lousy taste in art,'' goes the written text of a witty conversation between two people who are not visible in the ad. When he realizes he's talking to his host, the speaker quickly adds: ''And great taste in cocktails.'' Some advertisers have not formally identified the older half of the baby boom, but their ads are evidence that someone at the company or ad agency is tuned in to the aging trend. Diet Rite's straightshooting commercials are intended for ages 18 through 34. Yet they feature Tony Danza, 36, the popular star of the TV sitcom Who's the Boss?, and $6 million man Lee Majors, 47. Beads of sweat roll down the bionic man's brow after a strenuous workout at the gym, while a jingle plays: ''It doesn't matter who you are, it's gonna be a tough fight . . . Everybody's gotta Diet Rite.'' SAATCHI SAATCHI created the Diet Rite ads. Says Penelope Queen, executive vice president and research director: ''Most diet soda commercials show a young, shapely girl walking along the beach.'' But that approach implies that a slim figure is the effortless result of drinking the product. Queen went for reality instead. ''We wanted to show the vulnerability and the struggle.'' Older consumers can certainly relate to that! Realism is also the style of the Benson Hedges ads. Attractive men and women, generally in their 30s or 40s, smoke cigarettes in warm social situations that make the viewer yearn to be invited in. At first glance it appears that Benson Hedges is zeroing in on the older babyboomer. ''We use a cinema verite photo technique that is reminiscent of The Big Chill,'' acknowledges Ellen Merlo, group director of marketing promotions for Philip Morris, manufacturer of Benson Hedges. The entire advertising market will shift and embrace middle age.''
