INTRODUCTION AND TOPICS

After 35 years of economical rise, including a survival of the Asian Crisis, China's economy seems to slow down now in 2015 to a moderate growth. China's stock market crashed and share prices in Shanghai have lost a third of their value between mid-June and mid-August. Contributing 17% to the world economy, the Chinese slow down influences stock markets on a global scale. The recent explosion in the Tianjin harbour shows that safety regulations were not followed.

As a recurring pattern, the Chinese economical success story is accompanied by problems in wealth distribution, welfare and healthcare, environmental pollution, migrant workers and unemployment, corruption, evictions, power abuse, human right violations, dependency of the legal system, conflict over islands within the 9-dotted line etc. The steady growth has eased these problems during the last 35 years. If this growth slows down now, how will the problems develop?

The conference will discuss China in the light of the recent developments, but will also reflect on the historical development. Speakers will highlight aspects of society, economy, politics, culture, education, environment, corruption, power abuse, democratization and freedom. The Chinese speakers will focus on the uniqueness of the Chinese Path as "socialist with Chinese characteristics", while the Western speakers will focus on the rules and patterns, the Chinese Way is following. The forum will give an outlook on possible future developments.

CONFERENCE DETAILS

The conference is public and will give Chinese and Western experts opportunities for 15-minute presentations, each followed by 10 minutes discussion. Conference languages: Chinese and German (Interpretation will be provided).
