How to create a webpage in Wiki

Q: 我知道大概做出来是什么样子，但是具体操作还是比较迷糊……

A: 你用ctrl + f （f 是 find 的意思）找一下你想建立新的网页的地方。比如你要建立一个叫做 “wiki admin”的网页，那你先login，然后课网页里按一下“edit”。这个edit在最上边。然后在editor里面先找一下“wiki admin”两个词。找到了以后前边和后边写两个标点符号，就像这个样子：[ [ wiki admin ] ] (这些空格不要写，我只在这里写空格因为否则它在这个faq里面就变成连接了。你要按“save”，然后输入“wikicaptcha”这个密码。然后你看得到课网页，现在你加了标点符号的地方变成红色的链接。红色的意思是这个链接后面还没有网页。蓝色链接的意思是已经有这种网页。

The main task for the Wiki admin is to prepare the section of the course website which concerns the following week's tasks.

That means the Wiki admin needs to be one week ahead of time, because all the other students wait for her.

So the first things to do would be to check if there is already a section on the website for the following week.

Normally the course websites are structured with headlines. We have different headlines which appear larger (level 1) and smaller (level 2, level 3 etc.). In order to create a headline and therefore mark the section of the webpage as a separate part, you can add a "=". For example, if you want to create a new weeks' section, you can simple add

"= Session no. 2, Feb 28, 2022, Topic: Ancient Literature = " (of course, you do not type the blank spaces and no quotation marks)

After saving, this new section exists.

And you need to list under this header all the contents of that session.

It is good to create some subsections, by listing some minor headlines beneath, for example:

"= = Texts to read from the textbook to prepare for this session = ="

(Here you list this topics, student names and links to a new website (you remember, that is done by typing [ [ .... ] ]) to access the text the student created.

(Here you list this topics, student names and links for the student presentations. A link not to a website, but to a file (for example a pptx file) looks like this: " [ [ Media:Ancient_Literature_by_Wang_Jianguo|This is the link to the ancient Literature powerpoint by Xiao Wang ] ]".

Please make sure that you leave a blank line between two lines, because paragraphs are shown in Wiki linked together, only if you add a blank line, Wiki will display it as two separated paragraphs.

Also if you want to create a bullet list, simply type a "*" in front of the line for each bullet point. If you want to insert a picture, there are also editorial conventions. Please refer to the general website on how to edit in Wiki.

Also if you copy and paste a text into Wiki, please remember to delete any leading spaces at the beginning of lines. If you have a space in front of the line and then the text begins, it will be displayed in a grey box. So delete the spaces at the beginning of the line and it will appear as normal text.

If you want to save an edit, please input the password wikicaptcha.

How to create a homework page

Please make sure that you have a consistent naming convention for the webpages in order to keep the overview. You can look at the samples from last years.

It is also important that you repeat all links on new webpages, meaning that you should add a link to return to the course homepage on top of all new webpages.

How to distribute the homework to different students

1. Please create a student roll 学生名单 (Please remember that you should not list your own name in it, and not the ones of the Teaching Assistant and the Survey Assistans, because they do not take part in the homework, quizzes and powerpoint presentations. However, they all take part in the final exam papers. Then reformat it that it fits the following sample:

(So you can see that they follow alphabetic order. All without quotation marks and spaces.)

2. Then distribute the text (you find the Chinese texts which need to be translated with machine translation into English and then corrected by the students here (in Fall 2022 these are 3 books): https://bou.de/u/wiki/Book_projects#CNPIEC_ZH-EN) in equal parts to the students. In general, one should translate about 3 screen lines, which corresponds to 1-3 sentences:

How to tell the students how they should do their homework?

1. First of all, it is important to link the homework page to the course webpage. You can use the suggested logic. For example, the students are used to look at the section for next week's class. There you should create a subsection instructing the students what to prepare for next week's class. One thing should be, to read readings or textbook texts and to take a quiz on them. Another thing should be to select topics and to enroll in certain tasks during the semester. One of the tasks is to do a presentation. So you should also create a subsection of the session's subsection where the students can upload their powerpoints and fellow students can download it.

2. Then you should instruct the students how to do their homework.

The Chinese original is one paragraph. Then the student needs to do a blank line. Then the student writes the English translation. Then the students signs the work by typing - - ~ ~ ~ ~ at the end (without blanks). After clicking save, the "- - ~ ~ ~ ~" becomes the name and the date.

Then the fellow students writes a blank line. Then the fellow student copies and pastes the translation of her fellow student beneath. In the copied paragraph, the 2nd student can do the corrections, sign with "- - ~ ~ ~ ~", click "save" and input the password "wikicaptcha". So the 2nd translation should be better than the 1st.

And the 1st student can read the corrections and learn from it.

FAQ

Q: Should the international students do the translation of Hongloumeng and the presentation? But considering some of them cannot undersatnd Chinese well, it might be a difficult task for them.

A: Yes, but they should still try. They can for example use a machine translation program. I also recommend them to find Chinese friends to help them. All of this helps them to improve their computer skills, social competence, cultural awareness and integration into Chinese culture.

Homework

Wiki Admins do not take part in the quizzes, homework and do not present a power point, because they get 100 percent for the classroom contribution grade 零时分.

Q: Prof. Should Wiki Admin, teaching assistant and other six survey assistants do the translation homework and quizes ?

A: No. They get 100 points.

Important rules for creating new websites on Wiki

How do I create the page where the students find their translation homework

Important is that I later find all the translations as links on the book projects website. Therefore, if you create a page like this, you would start with the existing website with the whole text of the book and then add links to parts of the book on top of the page. These parts can be as long as 1 session‘s homework and can lead to subpages on which there is just one session‘s homework. If you have the subpage, you can also directly link To it from the respective place of the course homepage. However, you need to make sure that if one goes to a link or a sub webpage, one find immediately a link how to go back, e. g. to the book projects website or to the course homepage.

The translation page often gets too long, because it may contain a whole book in Chinese. If it will get even longer, a database error will occur. Please keep the page, but make sub-Pages and put links to the sub-Pages on the top of the page and on top of all subpages. Then divide the text up in 5 parts and move first the last 20% of the Chinese text to subpage 5, then the 2nd last 20% etc.

Don’t create double pages.

Translation is a team sport.

Except from the students, there are a lot of other people working on the book right now.

For example copy editors, proof readers living in the United States of America etc.

So if you create such a double page, the other people will continue to work in the old page.

This is not good.

Creating a homework website

Also, if you create a new page, never name it “Homework of session 2”.

Because on the platform there are 100 courses.

All page names need to be clearly associated to a course.

So you would have to include at least the date into the website name, and hope, that there is no other course having homework on the same date

Better call new pages “20221022_homework_lang_fall” - then it is unique and identifiable.

On a homework subpage, you can list all the different homework’s to do.

However, for the actual translation work, it is better to put a link to the sub webpage there.

What is the list of terms on a translation homework website?

When creating a translation page, do not forget the list of terms on top of the page, where people need to mention how they translate terms of the text which occur often. This list should be at the beginning of each book which is translated.

This helps the other translators.

Only when the whole book will be finished, the US based proofreader will look through the list of terms and make corrections. If he correct the term “Book of Documents” to “Book of Speeches and Documents”, then he can replace it in the whole book at once. Of course it would be good if the terms in the list are already accurate.
