====Introduction====

====Introduction====
   Chinese cultivation culture is a uniquely indigenous imaginative system rooted in local religious philosophy and folk myth. Its spiritual core derives from Daoist thought—above all, the cosmology of “the unity of Heaven and humanity” and the life philosophy of “following the Dao and valuing Nature.” The culture weaves in the theories of Daoist neidan: by refining an internal elixir, the practitioner synchronizes the micro-cosmos of the human body with the energy field of the macro-cosmos, thereby realizing “Heaven–human oneness.” As early as China’s pre-Qin period, works of myth and the supernatural appeared; The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing), for example, records countless strange beings and wondrous objects. Cultivation culture thus embodies both the yearning for longevity and the awe of natural power. In modern times, the explosive growth of online literature has propelled this cultural matrix into the present, producing blockbusters such as A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality. These novels have attracted vast new audiences to the genre and, in turn, spurred the creation of cultivation-themed games.

====The Popularity of Cultivation Games====
   China’s cultivation culture enjoys a long history, and creative exploration of it has never ceased. Today the market overflows with cultivation games of every description, though their quality ranges from excellent to mediocre. Despite this deep cultural reservoir, the country has yet to produce a true triple-A cultivation epic—partly for market reasons, partly because the genre is extraordinarily difficult to execute. That said, outstanding titles do exist. On Steam, games such as Seeking Immortality, Amazing Cultivation Simulator, and Tale of Immortal enjoy wide acclaim, while on mobile new releases like Immortal Life and the many text-based cultivation stories on the Orange Light platform continue to appear. Driven by the desire for longevity and supernatural power, players flock to these games to taste omnipotence and live an alternate life. The experience is both a journey into an ancient Chinese worldview and a release from real-world pressure. Last year’s smash hit Black Myth: Wukong, although not a high-freedom cultivation game per se, is likewise rooted in the larger cultivation-culture universe—proof enough of Chinese gamers’ enduring love for the theme and their hunger for quality titles.

   China's cultivation culture boasts a long history, and people's exploration and creative endeavors surrounding it have endured without fading. Today, the market is flooded with a wide variety of cultivation-themed games, each differing in type and varying greatly in quality. Despite the profound cultural heritage of cultivation, we have yet to produce a truly monumental masterpiece in this genre. This can be attributed to market factors as well as the immense difficulty in creating such a game. Of course, this is not to say that we lack excellent cultivation games. On the Steam platform, titles such as Looking for Longevity, Amazing Cultivation Simulator, and Tale of Immortal have received widespread acclaim. On mobile platforms, new cultivation games continue to emerge, such as A Thought of Freedom and various novel-style text-based cultivation games on the Orange Light platform. Driven by the pursuit of immortality and power, players exhibit tremendous enthusiasm for cultivation games. Through these games, players can experience a sense of omnipotence and immerse themselves in a drastically different life. This not only allows for an exploration and understanding of ancient Chinese culture but also serves as a release from the pressures of real life. Last year’s breakout hit, Black Myth: Wukong, draws its theme from the Ming Dynasty mythological novel Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en. While it is not a truly high-freedom cultivation game, it belongs to the broader sphere of cultivation-related games. This sufficiently reflects the deep affection Chinese people hold for cultivation culture and the strong demand for cultivation-themed games.

====Characteristics of Popular Cultivation Games====
   Limited by handset performance, PC cultivation titles tend to offer richer content and deeper systems. Leading examples—Seeking Immortality, Amazing Cultivation Simulator, and Tale of Immortal—illustrate why the genre captivates players. Seeking Immortality lives up to its name: the core loop is constant advancement toward eternal life. Text volume is modest and the main plot is thin, yet alchemy and artifact-forging systems are detailed. Multiple sects teach distinct arts; combat weaves the five Chinese elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, water—into combinative skills that chain for varied effects. Trading, befriending, and Dao-companion mechanics give a taste of the cultivation life, if not yet a full one. Tale of Immortal stresses exploration. Its sandbox world is vast, demanding constant travel and emergent encounters. A multitude of paths exist, and when a tribulation ends in failure players retain some talents for the next run, creating a positive feedback loop ideal for repeated playthroughs. Amazing Cultivation Simulator is essentially a sect-management sim: no fixed storyline, no time limit—players author their own school’s history.Together these three titles showcase different facets of the cultivation universe, while also revealing how daunting it is to condense the culture’s immense breadth into a single, high-freedom open-world game.

====Existent Problems====
   Although several cultivation-themed games have proven hits, the genre still lacks one truly comprehensive, top-tier title. First, any such game must preserve core xianxia mechanics—realm progression, alchemy, tribulations—while delivering a coherent main story and a generous web of side quests that let players live out a complete “immortal’s life.” Characters need three-dimensional writing and believable motives; otherwise the fantasy collapses. With dozens of cultivation schools available, each path should feel mechanically and narratively distinct rather than a palette-swap of the same spells. As noted earlier, Tale of Immortal offers a sprawling sandbox, but its late game devolves into repetitive errands that sap replay value. Embedding modern AI so NPCs can remember, react, and surprise would restore novelty and greatly extend the title’s life cycle. Secondly, a problem common to many games—not just cultivation ones—is the sexualized presentation of female characters. This practice has been normalized for so long that most players no longer notice it. Female bodies are routinely used as marketing assets to drive sales or micro-transactions. In Seeking Immortality, for example, character creation lets players adjust breast size for female avatars, yet offers no comparable body sliders for males. If this were simply a matter of aesthetic variety, the option would exist for both sexes. Developers must recognize the double standard and correct it. Finally, the xianxia universe boasts a vast worldview. With so many systems in play, a robust onboarding process is essential to prevent newcomers from bouncing off. The Scroll of Taiwu is a cautionary example: its setting is huge and its mechanics deep, but its minimal guidance demands dozens of hours just to grasp the basics. A great game needs an intuitive tutorial arc; otherwise the steep entry barrier will keep the audience small.

===Advices for Cultivation Games===
 +
  The cultivation cultural system is vast and highly individualized, making it difficult for a single development team to fulfill all players' imaginations. Therefore, developers should proactively open up and support MOD (game modification) creation, which represents the optimal solution for breaking through content bottlenecks and extending a game's lifespan. This should not merely involve "allowing modifications" but should be elevated to a systematic strategy: providing stable and user-friendly development tools, opening up certain underlying interfaces, and establishing an official MOD certification and showcase platform. This move will yield multiple benefits. First, it can significantly enrich game content at a very low marginal cost. Countless examples, from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to Tale of Immortal, have proven that an active MOD community can spawn entirely new storylines, cultivation techniques, maps, and even gameplay mechanics, truly bringing the game world to life and continuously satisfying players' desire for high degrees of freedom. Second, it can channel players' creative enthusiasm into direct momentum for the game's evolution, fostering a symbiotic ecosystem of "official framework led by developers, supplemented with player-created content." Developers can gain insights into players' genuine preferences from this process and may even integrate outstanding MODs into official updates. Ultimately, a thriving MOD community will itself become the game's most robust moat, sustaining the vitality of the player community through continuous content creation and achieving a win-win outcome for both commercial success and cultural impact. Furthermore, a common characteristic among the vast majority of current cultivation games is that their core driving force is the pursuit of ascension, yet ascension often marks the end of the gameplay experience or a sharp decline in content. This essentially reduces "attaining enlightenment" to an endpoint rather than the starting point of a new realm. To address this, game developers should design post-ascension gameplay, constructing an entirely new world beyond ascension based on the familiar cultivation narrative. This would expand the gameplay from combat and cultivation to a more creative, world-shaping level. However, the expansion of the worldview will inevitably introduce ethical and philosophical questions. Game developers must thoughtfully craft a profound and nuanced new world to avoid an "anticlimactic" or poorly concluded experience.

====The Modern Significance of Chinese Cultivation Games====
   The rise of cultivation games carries weight far beyond entertainment: it marks the moment when traditional Chinese culture finds a vividly living form of transformation and expression in the digital age. Culturally, these titles translate once-abstruse neidan philosophy and mythic lore into visible, playable, and emotionally resonant interactive experiences, serving as a “cultural interface” for global audiences and a dynamic practice of tradition. Socially and psychologically, the core “level-up” mechanic mirrors contemporary youth’s experience of involution and relentless self-improvement, while the narrative of “defying fate to rewrite destiny” offers symbolic transcendence of real-world pressure, functioning as a unique psychological compensation and emotional outlet. Industrially and creatively, the popularity of the cultivation theme breaks the long-standing dominance of Western fantasy and Japanese ACG in global pop culture, proving that indigenous cultural resources can incubate products with worldwide appeal. It not only carves out a distinctive “cultural track” for the game industry but also sparks limitless creative possibilities for modernizing and internationalizing traditional culture.

Chinese Cultivation Games

Introduction

 Chinese cultivation culture is a uniquely indigenous imaginative system rooted in local religious philosophy and folk myth. Its spiritual core derives from Daoism thought—above all, the cosmology of “the unity of Heaven and humanity” and the life philosophy of “following the Dao and valuing Nature.” The culture weaves in the theories of Daoist neidan: by refining an internal elixir, the practitioner synchronizes the micro-cosmos of the human body with the energy field of the macro-cosmos, thereby realizing “Heaven–human oneness.” As early as China’s pre-Qin period, works of myth and the supernatural appeared; The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing), for example, records countless strange beings and wondrous objects.

The Popularity of Cultivation Games

Characteristics of Popular Cultivation Games

 Limited by handset performance, PC cultivation titles tend to offer richer content and deeper systems. Leading examples—Looking for Longevity, Amazing Cultivation Simulator, and Tale of Immortal—illustrate why the genre captivates players. Looking for Longevity lives up to its name: the core loop is constant advancement toward eternal life.

Chinese Cultivation vs. Western Fantasy

 Western magic enjoys an equally long pedigree, producing classics such as The Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire. Yet the two traditions diverge sharply. The first is purpose. Chinese cultivation seeks the Great Dao, the creative transformation of Heaven and Earth, and personal immortality; Western magic is usually a tool for acquiring wealth or raw power. The second is scope. The cultivation corpus is vast—inner alchemy, artifact refining, talismans, formations, beast taming, medicinal pills—allowing practitioners to specialize in many schools. Western fantasy revolves chiefly around spell-casting. The last is lifespan. A cultivator’s longevity and physical prowess increase with each breakthrough; Western mages remain bound by ordinary human limits. In short, Chinese cultivation is a self-contained, monumental system parallel to mundane reality, whereas Western magic is an extension of the human world rather than a path beyond it.

Prospects: Cultivation Games Meet VR and Brain–Computer Interfaces

 Tomorrow’s technologies—above all VR and brain–computer interfaces—promise to revolutionize cultivation games, upgrading players from “controlling a character” to “becoming a cultivator.” VR will finally dissolve the screen: gamers will walk bodily through cloud-wrapped immortal peaks and cave-heavens modeled on Daoist aesthetics, forming mudras and flicking sword-fingers to cast spells, achieving combat and meditation that feel like “plucking five strings with one hand while a lone goose disappears into the sky.” A step further, brain–computer interfaces could turn the most abstract part of cultivation—Xinfa—into quantifiable, interactive feedback. By monitoring EEG or other physiological signals, the game could translate “perceiving the Dao” or “gathering qi” into tangible sensations, offering an unprecedented realism previously confined to scripture. AI will drive a dynamically evolving society of NPCs endowed with autonomous memory and emotion, yielding finer, personalized narratives. Yet the same technologies pose challenges: extreme immersion may blur the boundary between virtual and real, affecting mental states, while high technical thresholds could widen the digital divide. The true breakthrough, therefore, will lie not in piling up gadgets but in using them to convey, with greater fidelity, the philosophical horizon of “Heaven–human oneness” that lies at the heart of cultivation culture.

Existent Problems

In Looking for Longevity, for example, character creation lets players adjust breast size for female avatars, yet offers no comparable body sliders for males.

Advices for Cultivation Games

The Modern Significance of Chinese Cultivation Games

Industrially and creatively, the popularity of the cultivation theme might break the long-standing dominance of Western fantasy and Japanese ACG in global pop culture, proving that indigenous cultural resources can incubate products with worldwide appeal. It not only carves out a distinctive “cultural track” for the game industry but also sparks limitless creative possibilities for modernizing and internationalizing traditional culture.
