Hardly anyone knows that for more than thousand years (till AD 1250) imperial China was the globally dominating power in terms of GDP and trade.

Put into historical perspective, China’s massive rise in importance in the contemporary world order may be seen as a return to normal rather than an unprecedented new threat for the West. –

How did “the West” see China in its 1st cultural encounter with her and how did the image of China develop until today? How do Chinese people see themselves and us today and how do we see them? At present, China challenges our prejudice that economic success and democratic freedom are interdependent. & e Chinese semi-authoritarian way has a lot of appeal for some other Asian and African developing countries. – Important issues have to be examined in the course of our seminar: What are the political and economic prospects for China in a multipolar world? Will China rise to superpower status based on its fast growing economy and its military power?

Will China’s economic boom continue at the cost of ecological integrity and political liberty? Will the authoritarian regime of the Communist Party be able to maintain its fragile political strategy of locally controlled market capitalism and national pseudo-democracy? How does the “rise of the network society” (Manuel Castells) affect Chinese authoritarian political culture? Is it time for us to learn more from Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism? Is it time for Chinese authorities and citizens to learn more from us about human dignity, human rights and a culture of liberalism?

'2' Oct 30, 2013 - Session 2: The historical moment, silver flow and currency war - terms and definitions

Critical discussion of Mungello 2005 (see powerpoint).

Discussion: Can we apply today terms (democracy, human rights) to historical China? (See: Aristotle's slaves. Politically correct use of "black", "colored" in the USA.)

Can we use the term "China" for the region we call China today? 1800-200 BCE European mummies were found in the Taklamakhan Desert. Early nation-building tribes were European/Mongolian/Turks. 1,000 out of 2,000 years AD (CE) China was ruled by non-Chinese ethnities. The 5,000 years "unbroken" "Chinese" history are a myth.

Terms turn negative or positive through constant biased media reports. E.g. "Gastarbeiter" was positive in the beginning and turned slightly negative only afterwards.When a term turns negative (like "black") you change it (e.g. into "colored"). After a while, the term has to be exchanged again.

Activity: Survey - Rate the term "Ausländer" on a scale of -5 (negative) to 5 (positive), how the society sees the term. (Result: -1.45 - result in China +1.5.)

Result: Terms change over time and you need to explain historical context when you apply a contemporary term to a historical phenomenon.

Strikingly parallel: World capital flow (silver) into China (export surplus), could only be balanced by making Chinse addicted to opium. Todays world capital flow into China (export surplus) - could not be balanced so far.

Discussion: Isn't it a good thing to be turned into a Chinese by a new Chinese super power? Answer: Yes, but only if China turns into a free country before.

Many people are surprised about China's rise to economical super power at the beginning of the 21st century. However, what people tend to overlook is the macrosperspective. China actually was the world economical leader until around 1250 (highest GDP). So China's rise to new power is not surprising at all and it is more a return to its traditional super power status.

• We start with a discussion about Mungello, chapter 4.
• Today's topic is the "3rd way" - economical freedom based upon an unfree society.
• After the 1st way (capitalism) and the 2nd way (communism), China now follows a 3rd way (Manchester capitalism, oligarchy, corruption, environmental pollution and economical espionage masked as communism, economical freedom and suppression of the mind), which seems attractive for semi-authoritarian neighbor states like Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam etc. Is the Chinese "dirty" economy more successful than "free" economies of the West? Does the NSA espionage reveal that also the Western economies are "dirty"?
