Cultural Connotations on “Dragon” in English and Chinese Animal Words     [Abstract] Animal words in English and Chinese contain rich cultural connotations, playing a different role both in English and Chines cultures. Among them, “dragon” in Chinese is different from that in English. The Chinese “dragon” has always symbolized auspiciousness, while the English “dragon” stands for evil and violence. Due to a great many differences between the two countries about the cultural connotations of “dragon”, which may arouse misunderstandings between the two languages in cross-cultural communications, the paper makes a deep analysis of the cultural connotations of animal words of “dragon” in English and Chinese. With methods of literature search, causal analysis, and comparative analysis, this study shows that there are indeed distinctions between the two “dragons” attributed to the mythologies, religions, national conditions and geography, but there should be a pursuit of seeking agreement while reserving differences instead of discriminating or querying each other, so as to contribute to the cross-cultural exchanges and promote the cultural diversity in the world.
