Abstract
Howie & Landau Seven Chivalrous Biography (hereinafter referred to as Howie & Landau) is a long-form wuxia animation series produced by Hunan Hongmeng Cartoon Communication Co., Ltd., consisting of 108 episodes, each approximately 15 minutes in length. The story follows seven chivalrous heroes, including Howie and Landau, as they battle against Black-hearted Tiger, the leader of the Demonic Cult (Zou Yi & He Wenlong, 2011, p.121). As a youth-oriented production, Howie & Landau not only inherits the core narrative values of classical Chinese wuxia—such as the spirit of loyalty and righteousness, collectivism, and self-sacrifice—but also integrates the “daring to be first and unyielding” spirit characteristic of Huxiang culture. Drawing inspiration from the natural landscapes of Zhangjiajie, the animation constructs a “Forest Kingdom” with strong regional characteristics. Its art style, character design, and plot all showcase distinct traditional Chinese cultural elements.
Plot Summary
Howie & Landau tells the story of a battle between good and evil spanning from 347 to 397 AD. Set in the picturesque mountains of Zhangjiajie, the plot begins with the Black-hearted Tiger, leader of the Demon Cult, attempting to capture the mythical beast Qilin in order to drink its blood and enhance his martial powers. Seven heroes unite their swords to defeat him through the legendary “Seven Sword Fusion” technique, though they suffer grave injuries in the process. Fifty years later, Black-hearted Tiger resurfaces with a vengeance. Before his death, Howie’s father entrusts him with the mission of seeking out the successors of the remaining six swords. Young Howie embarks on a perilous journey, and after enduring numerous trials, the Seven Swords reunite and ultimately defeat the Black-hearted Tiger, restoring peace to the Forest Kingdom.
The Chivalrous Spirit of Howie & Landau
As a youth-oriented martial arts series, Howie & Landau not only inherits the traditional narrative structure of Chinese wuxia—centered around loyalty, righteousness, collectivism, and self-sacrifice—but also integrates the regional cultural ethos of Huxiang culture, emphasizing courage, resilience, and pioneering spirit. The series constructs a richly localized “Forest Jianghu” by drawing heavily from the natural scenery of Zhangjiajie. Its visual design, character development, and narrative expression all demonstrate strong elements of traditional Chinese culture.
The appeal of Chinese martial arts films and TV shows largely stems from their value-driven portrayal of heroism. The character design in Howie & Landau draws significant influence from classic wuxia literature, particularly the character archetypes found in Jin Yong’s novels. According to He Qian (2011, p.22), the series uses three main techniques for character construction:
1.Using dramatic encounters as a catalyst for character growth and narrative development;
2.Integrating historical and cultural background with detailed world-building;
3.Merging martial arts, chivalry, and romance to enrich character arcs.
Howie & Landau continues the traditional wuxia framework, with “defending the innocent and safeguarding the homeland” as its central theme, while emphasizing collective heroism over individualism. In the spirit of Chinese philosophy—advocating “harmony in diversity,” “valuing peace,” “gentle strength,” and “universal love”—the “martial” in Chinese martial arts culture is not about domination or aggression, but about protection. The protagonists of Howie & Landau embody this philosophy as they fight not for glory but for the protection of Qilin and all living beings (Feng Qiuyue, 2022, pp.31–32). Though disagreements arise among the seven, they reunite for a common cause, showcasing teamwork over personal valor.
Howie & Landau and Huxiang Culture
The series’ core ethos is deeply rooted in the traditions of Huxiang culture, which emphasizes endurance, perseverance, and unyielding spirit. The sacrifice of Howie’s father and the inherited sense of duty in Howie’s quest for justice reflect the Huxiang value of “bearing responsibility for the world.” The recurring themes of resistance, persistence, and mutual support among the Seven Swords echo the cultural maxim of “better death than surrender” and the pioneering character of the Huxiang people (Xu Jing, 2012, p.41). Visually, the animation draws extensively from the geographical and cultural landscape of Hunan. Recreated elements such as Tianmen Mountain, Baofeng Lake, and Yubi Peak help form a stylized “Forest Jianghu.” For instance, Howie’s residence is the Jade Qilin Palace at the foot of the mountains, while Landau lives in a tranquil mountain villa—both artistic reinterpretations of Western Hunan’s natural settings (Zou Yi & He Wenlong, 2011, p.122). This blend of realism and fantasy not only enhances the visual appeal but also subtly transmits regional culture to young audiences. In addition, the characters’ costumes incorporate patterns, colors, and accessories influenced by ethnic minorities such as the Miao and Dong, highlighting respect for and creative use of traditional cultural symbols.
The Broadcast Controversy
After airing its 89th episode, Howie & Landau was abruptly suspended on the evening of February 26, 2007, sparking a nationwide uproar. Viewers who had anticipated episode 90 found it missing from the CCTV schedule, prompting tens of thousands of online complaints directed at “Uncle Liu” (then head of CCTV's youth channel), accusing him of issuing the suspension. This incident, known as the “ban controversy,” originated from a viral post by a netizen known as “Lao Dan(老蛋),” who criticized the series as “low-class, violent, scary, and vulgar,” claiming it distorted children's values (Jia Shupin & Gao Song, 2007, p.66).
Opponents argued that despite its innovative combination of martial arts and animal characters, the series failed to eliminate violent conflict, citing scenes such as Landau’s wrist-cutting and Black Tiger’s explosion as inappropriate for young children. Supporters, however, praised the show’s high production value, moral clarity, and promotion of teamwork and chivalry, viewing it as a breakthrough in original Chinese animation (Zhang Ting, 2007, p.76).
Amid fierce public debate, Howie & Landau resumed broadcasting on March 28, 2007. This controversy revealed deep tensions between China’s animation governance system and public expectations, becoming a significant turning point in the industry. It highlighted long-standing issues around content rating, creative freedom, and societal acceptance—issues still relevant in China's evolving animation landscape.
