I'm just curious, what exactly does "The first successful Chinese-language newspaper was published in Hong Kong in 1864." mean? Were there other not successful newspapers?

I'm just curious, what exactly does "The first successful Chinese-language newspaper was published in Hong Kong in 1864." mean? Were there other not successful newspapers?
