The Culture of Chinese Names
Chen Weiping
Abstract In Chinese culture, a name is not just a personal identifier but also a significant symbol carrying family aspirations and cultural heritage. In the structure of Chinese names, a surname precedes a given name, and there are both monosyllabic and polysyllabic surnames. Most Han Chinese share a few common surnames, such as Wang and Li. Family Names in Hundreds, a work that has been passed down to the present, is an important resource for learning about the culture of Chinese surnames. When naming their children, parents often consider the auspicious meanings and their hopes for the child's future. Nowadays, parents place greater emphasis on individuality and creativity in naming. Additionally, generation names, shared among family members, are an important marker of family history and cultural inheritance. Moreover, there are many beautiful and interesting Chinese names. Overall, the culture of Chinese names reflects the societal concepts of family and a profound understanding of personal destiny in Chinese society.
In Chinese culture, name plays an important role in Chinese people's life. Parents have a great responsibility to choose a good name for their baby. Chinese parents believe good names will bring good luck and fortune to their child.
Chinese names consist of a surname (family name) and a given name. The surname comes first followed by a given name, opposite to the Western name order. Most surnames are just one Chinese character. A few have two characters. Most given names have two characters, some have one, and very occasionally three are used. (Marc 2023)
Chinese surnames Chinese surnames are categorized into monosyllabic and polysyllabic surnames. Monosyllabic surnames consist of a single character, whereas polysyllabic surnames are composed of two or more Chinese characters. In China, polysyllabic surnames are relatively rare, but there are some well-known ones, such as Ouyang, Sima, Shangguan, and Dongfang. The origins of polysyllabic surnames are diverse; some are derived from fiefs, official positions, or occupations, while others are formed by the combination of two monosyllabic surnames. (He 2001) There are about 2,000 Chinese surnames in use today, but about half of all Han Chinese people share the same 19 surnames. The most common surnames are Wang and Li. The next 8 in the top 10 most common Chinese surnames are: Zhang, Liu, Chen, Yang, Huang, Zhao, Wu, and Zhou. Family Names in Hundreds is a classic Chinese text that has been passed down from ancient times, originating in the Song Dynasty. It compiles common Chinese surnames and arranges them in a rhythmic order, which facilitates learning for children and beginners. Each surname is followed by a brief explanation that outlines the origin or historical figures associated with the surname, making it an essential tool for understanding the culture of Chinese surnames. In China, women don't change their surnames when they get married. And nowadays, kids' surnames can be the same as their mother's or father's (or they could take both, like a double-barreled surname). But traditionally, Chinese children always take their father's surname.
Chinese given names A given name serves as a person's identifier in society, typically given by their parents at birth. Almost all Chinese given names are made up of one, two, or three Chinese characters, which are written after the surnames. Two-character given names are by far the most popular for most Chinese, followed by one-character ones. Very few people have three characters for their given name. Some of these people have their mother's surname as the first character of their given names. (Kałużyńska 2016, 161-186) Influenced by Confucian culture, Chinese naming customs places great importance on their auspiciousness and meaning. Often, parents will take into account factors such as the child's birth time, family genealogy, and the Five Elements (Wu Xing) and Bazi (Eight Characters) when naming their child. Given names often carry the parents' hopes and blessings for their children, with characters like "Jia" (excellent), "Hui" (wisdom), and "Qiang" (strength) reflecting the parents' good wishes and aspirations for their offspring. Given names of a certain year often commemorate some important event. Such as Jianguo ('Establish County') was used by many babies born during the year that the People’s Republic of China was founded (1949). (Shi 2015,20-21) As times evolve, nowadays, people place greater emphasis on individuality and creativity when naming their children. Parents from the post-80s and post-90s generations tend to prefer unique and meaningful given names for their offspring. Internet slang, English elements, and even sci-fi themes have been incorporated into names, reflecting the diversity and inclusiveness of modern life. (Zhu&Gu 2016, 78-79) Chinese given names have many taboos. One of them is using the name of old relatives or just copying the name of a famous person or celebrity. For example, sons mustn't have the same names as their fathers.
Chinese Generation Names A Chinese generation name is one of the characters in a standard two-character Chinese given name, which is shared by the same generation, such as cousins or siblings. The character used can be the first or second one. Generational names are not only a means of identification among family members but also an essential carrier of family history and cultural heritage. Through the use of generational names, family members can better understand their blood relations and the history of their lineage, which in turn strengthens the family's cohesion and sense of belonging. (He 2001) In a big traditional Chinese family, you will see many young boys or girls sharing the same generation character in their given names. For example, 李祖阳 and 李祖丽 share the same character '祖', while陈亚兰and陈辉兰share the same character ‘兰’. Sometimes the boys will have one generation name and the girls another. With the progress of time, the use of generational names has diminished, but they continue to be preserved and passed down in certain regions and families. They remain an important means of connecting family members and perpetuating family culture.
Beautiful Chinese names There are many beautiful Chinese names with good wishes and phonetic harmony. The Chinese characters are combined in a pleasing way and have beautiful meanings. Here are some of the most beautiful names: 映月 Yingyue: Girls' names containing 'moon' have the cherished meanings of beauty and harmony. The name Yingyue means 'reflection of the moon'. 芷若 Zhiruo: The Chinese characters 芷 and 若 are two herbal plants. In ancient China, many parents give their baby's name by the name of herbal plants. For example, Zhou Zhiruo is a character from Jin Yong's (Louis Cha's) wuxia novel The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber. 望舒 Wangshu: Wang means 'hope' and shu means 'comfortable'. For instance, Dai Wangshu is a modern Chinese symbolist poet and translator. 莫愁 Mochou: Mochou means 'free of sadness'. To give an example, Li Mochou is a character from another wuxia novel by Jin Yong (Louis Cha), The Return of the Condor Heroes. (Zong 2024, 41-43)
Funny Chinese Names When a surname and a given name combine, some of them can be very funny. For example, a man whose surname is 钱 ('Money') could have the full name 钱多 (Qian Duo — 'Money Much'), which means 'too much money'. Someone with the surname 周 ('Week' is one of several meanings for Zhou) could have the given name 末 (Mo — 'end'), then his full name would mean 'weekend'. And 简 (Jian) is indeed a relatively rare Chinese surname. Someone with this surname could have the full name 简单 (Jian Dan), which translates to "simple" in English.
