Semester Final Essay
Xiang embroidery
1.Introduction
Xiang embroidery was born from the misty and nurturing atmosphere of agricultural and mulberry civilization. It is the generic name of Xiang embroidery technology that radiates to the whole Hunan region with centered on Changsha. Originating from miraculous and magnificent embroidery of Chu and Han dynasties, Xiang embroidery has developed with a long history that can be traced back over two thousand years to the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, which is now one of "China's four famous embroidery" alongside Su embroidery from Jiangsu, Shu embroidery from Sichuan, and Yue embroidery from Guangdong. This art form is not merely a craft but a vivid expression of Xiangchu culture—a unique blend of the mystical charm of ancient Chu and the resilience of the Hunan people who have inherited and innovated this craft through generations.
For centuries, with its bold aesthetic style and unparalleled craftsmanship, Xiang embroidery has captivated the attention of people all over the world, becoming a shining pearl in the treasure trove of Chinese traditional arts. Xiang embroidery uses needle as brush and thread as pigment. The key to distinguish Xiang embroidery from other types lies in its“vivid”character. As the saying goes, “An embroidered flower seems to be fragrant, an embroidered bird seems to be chirping, an embroidered tiger seems to be running and an embroidered figure seems to have vivid expressions.” This saying vividly captures the lifelike artistic effect that Xiang embroidery pursues, which is the ultimate goal of every embroiderer who devotes themselves to this craft.
2.History of Xiang Embroidery
The history of Xiang embroidery is a journey that intertwines with the Chinese civilization. Archaeological discoveries, most notably the exquisite silk fabrics unearthed from the Mawangdui Han Tombs in Changsha in 1972, provide concrete evidence that the roots of this craft stretch back over 2,300 years. While the basic stitches found in these ancient tombs bear a striking resemblance to the techniques used today, Xiang embroidery as a distinct style truly flourished during the Qing Dynasty a period when the social economy was prosperous and the demand for high-quality handicrafts was on the rise, creating favorable conditions for the development of Xiang embroidery. By the late Qing and early Republican periods, it had reached a zenith of sophistication with its techniques becoming more refined。
At the end of the 19th century, the growing demand of handcrafts brought a golden opportunity to embroidery industry, as the development of commodity economy promoted the transformation of traditional handicrafts from family workshops to large-scale production. In 1898, Changsha opened the first embroidery factory that specialized in the production and sales of Xiang embroidery products, which meant Xiang embroidery embarked on the road to commercialization. After 1898, with the development of embroidery industry, more and more painters were hired to draw blueprint, which broadened the theme and improved the artistic quality of Xiang embroidery. The participation of painters not only triggered the reform of embroidery drafts but also further promoted the rise of the Xiang embroidery industry. From then, based on Chinese painting, the combination of poetry, books, embroidery, and painting has become a major feature of traditional Xiang embroidery.
From 1910 to 1935, Xiang embroidery frequently exhibited at domestic and foreign fairs and won numerous awards. In 1910, Xiang embroidery made its debut in Nanjing's·Nanyang industy Association".In 1911, Xiang embroidery won “Best Award" at "Torino Expo" in Italy. In 1915,Xiang embroidery won the fist price at Panama World Expo in San Francisco, USA.In 1983, Xiang embroidery "President Roosevelt" lead to uproar at American"Chicago Centennial Progress Expo".In 1935, Xiang embroidery tiger was awarded the "only award" at the "West Lake Expo" in Hangzhou.
After the foundation of the PRC, Xiang embroidery gained a new life as the new government attached great importance to the protection and inheritance of traditional crafts, providing policy and financial support for the development of Xiang embroidery. With the support of the Communist Party of China and government, Hunan embroiderers have restored, sorted out and developed the traditional skills and created new techniques. It has exhibited in more than 50 countries serving as a cultural messenger that promotes Chinese culture and enhances cultural exchanges between China and other countries, which earned great honor and a large amount of foreign exchange for country. In the 1950s, the great work of Xiang embroidery "The Great Meeting", based on the meeting between Chairman Mao and Stalin, was exhibited in Moscow and praised by the audience. From 1981, when the state began to hold the "China Arts and Crafts Hundred Flowers Awards" selection, Xiang embroidery won gold awards many times proving its leading position in China's arts and crafts field. In 2006, Xiang embroidery was listed among the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage which provided legal protection for its inheritance and development and made more people realize the importance of protecting this precious traditional craft.
3.Main Features of Xiang embroidery
(1)Stitching Techniques
In the long-term process of production practice, while the embroidery artists meet the demand of daily necessities production, they continue to climb the peak of skills. These technological innovations have pushed Xiang embroidery to new levels one after another, and have made Xiang embroidery an important position in China's weaving and embroidery industry. The uniqueness of Xiang embroidery lies in its meticulous stitching techniques.
The split-needle stitch (掺针) allows embroiderers to split a standard silk thread into 2, 4, 8, or even 64 superfine strands that are hardly told difference with the naked eye. However, embroidery artists can make use of these split pieces and blend them into a harmonious whole works through the ingenious combination and separation of threads to form natural color gradients and light and shadow changes. Using these ultra-fine threads, craftsmen can create seamless color transitions (gradients). This is particularly effective when embroidering delicate subjects like the petals of a lotus flower, the soft fur of a cat, or the misty landscapes of the Xiang River, giving the embroidery a soft, painted effect. Split-needle stitch was further improved by artists to make it colorful and lively. The improvement of split-needle stitch brought a leap development to Xiang embroidery skills and this stitch has become one of the most important basic stitches of Xiang embroidery, laying the foundation for the creation of lifelike works.
Among hundreds of stitching techniques, “Peng Mao” stitch (fluffy stitching) is the most celebrated and distinctive technique. It is a stitch that creates a "fluffy" or "rough" texture, it was specifically developed to depict the fur of beasts. With the fur stitch, a panda comes to life, each stitch carefully mimicking the direction and texture of real fur. When embroidering a tiger or a lion, the“Peng Mao”stitch allows the threads to stand on end, mimicking the actual texture of animal fur making the animal look as if it is about to jump out of the embroidery at any moment. This creates a striking three-dimensional effect. Before this technique was perfected, embroidered animals often looked flat lacking the vividness and vitality that make them attractive. With “Peng Mao”stitch, the animals gained a sense of movement, power, and life, earning Xiang Embroidery its reputation for having "tigers that can run" and this reputation has become a symbol of the unique artistic charm of Xiang embroidery.
Double-sided Varied Embroidery (Quanyi Embroidery) is hailed as the "magic" of Xiang Embroidery and represents one of the highest pinnacles of Chinese embroidery technology. Unlike conventional double-sided embroidery (where both sides are identical), Quanyi Embroidery utilizes the sophisticated technique of "hiding the needle and thread" to present completely different images, colors, stitching techniques, and even artistic conceptions on the front and back of the same translucent fabric.
The difficulty of this craft is extremely high, relying on the mastery of "transitions." The embroiderer must cleverly hide the thread ends within the inter layer without cutting them, ensuring that neither side shows any stitch marks or interferes with the other. For instance, one side might depict a vivid, fierce tiger, while the reverse presents a misty landscape painting; one side may use bold colors, while the other remains elegant and subdued.this process is so complicated that it may take months or even years to complete a single piece of Quanyi Embroidery work. This art form not only demonstrates the miraculous skills of Xiang Embroidery artisans but also embodies the traditional Chinese philosophical concept of "Yin and Yang generating each other, combining reality and illusion" reflecting the profound cultural connotation and aesthetic pursuit of Chinese traditional art. Each piece is a unique artwork with exceptional artistic and collection value. The choice of threads is equally crucial. Xiang embroidery uses high-quality silk threads dyed in over 1,000 hues , ensuring that every piece is a masterpiece of color and detail that can retain its beauty for hundreds of years if properly preserved.
(2)Themes
The themes of Xiang embroidery are diverse, ranging from classical Chinese motifs to modern innovations adapting to the changing times while inheriting the traditional cultural essence. However, certain subjects have become iconic symbols of the craft. The most famous subjects are tigers and lions. Known for their fierce eyes and textured fur using the “Peng Mao”stitch. Peonies and Lotus symbolizing wealth and purity respectively, and these flowers are often used in Xiang embroidery works to express people's good wishes for life. These flowers are renowned for their layered, three-dimensional appearance that makes them look as realistic as the real flowers blooming.
4.Current State of Xiang Embroidery
Xiang embroidery proves itself adaptable, evolving with the times while preserving its core essence and this adaptability is the key to its survival and development in the modern society.
In trendy art galleries in Changsha, young designers are blending traditional Xiang embroidery with modern elements. They create “streetwear-inspired Xiang embroidery” hoodies, where classic dragon motifs meet urban graffiti styles.
Online platforms play a key role in promoting Xiang embroidery globally. Videos showcasing the embroidery process attract millions of views allowing people to witness the hard work and dedication of embroidery artists, and eco-friendly Xiang embroidery products made with sustainable materials gain popularity. This ancient art form continues to evolve, demonstrating that tradition and innovation can coexist harmoniously.
In recent years, Xiang embroidery has continued to serve as a stunning cultural ambassador for China on the international stage. In 2025, Liu Ya, a young inheritor of China's Xiang embroidery intangible cultural heritage, held the “Liu Ya: Embroidering Time—Xiang Embroidery Art Exhibition”at the Grand Palais in Paris. This marked the first time Xiang embroidery was showcased by a solo exhibition at an international top-tier craft and art exhibition.
French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron personally visited the exhibition site, where Brigitte Macron acquired a Xiang embroidery palace fan that seamlessly blended traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. Brigitte Macron expressed deep interest in the exquisite techniques and Eastern aesthetics of Xiang embroidery, praising it as "full of spiritual charm, a truly oriental artistic treasure," and stating that "this piece is not merely a craftwork, but an artistic bridge connecting Eastern and Western cultures."Her words not only recognized the artistic value of Xiang embroidery but also emphasized the important role of cultural exchanges in promoting mutual understanding between different countries.Liu Ya's exhibition booth became one of the most popular attractions at the biennale, with many French visitors experiencing Chinese embroidery for the first time and stopping to marvel, "It's like painting with silk thread!"Wang Meng, Director of the Paris Cultural Center of China, commented: "Liu Ya's works show the world that traditional Chinese craftsmanship is confidently engaging with the future."
Behind these embroidered artworks, every artist puts in lots of time and energy and is also the best example of inheriting traditional craftsmanship. In the future, Xiang embroidery will always ride on the wings of innovation and development to keep glowing with youth and vitality continuing to shine as a precious treasure of Chinese traditional culture and making greater contributions to the development of world art and cultural exchanges.
