一、 主旨與問題意識

在《紅樓夢》中,“丫鬟”及“丫頭”二詞常被用以指稱年輕女婢。在作此用途時,一種常見譯法是 “slave”或“slave girl”。但本文從作品時代及文本語境出發,站在功能對等及讀者反應角度,認為譯為“maid servant”或“servant girl”更好。

一方面,按清朝律法,《夢》中的丫鬟並不完全與英文的“slave”等同。據《牛津高階英語詞典》,“slave”表示被合法佔有並強迫工作的奴隸。按清律,丫鬟法律地位要稍高於 “slave”。《夢》中的丫鬟可分為兩類,第一類簽“白契”,第二類簽“紅契”,或是家奴所出。相對于英文語境的“slave”,第一類仍有部分人身自主權,可贖身重獲自由。而第二類儘管終身為奴,人身、婚姻受控,但相比英文的“slave”,卻仍有部分人權,如按照清律,主人無故殺僕有罪。

另一方面,“maid servant”或“servant girl”能更好地傳達小說中賈府丫鬟的特殊地位和主僕的特殊關係。在小說文本語境中,賈府氛圍寬鬆,主僕間事實上已超越了單純的尊卑關係。寶玉等人相對較尊重丫鬟、大丫鬟比年輕主子體面,甚至有自己的小丫鬟、賈家敗落時主動釋放丫鬟,允其另行婚配等事實,都表明小說中丫鬟地位更靠近“servant”而非“slave”。

此外,儘管部分馬克思主義觀點以階級鬥爭阐释小說,但限於時代,作者並無顯性的階級意識,文本本身也並未有意凸顯这点。因此,由於英文中“slave”政治色彩較強,採用“slave”將帶給讀者多餘的政治意味,使譯文失真。

因此,綜合時代、文本語境,為使譯文尽量達成與原文功能和目的(Skopos)對等,使譯文讀者獲得接近原文讀者的文本資訊,本文認為應將“丫鬟”及“丫頭”譯為“maid servant”或“servant girl”。

二、研究方法

本文採用文獻研究、文本細讀法及實證材料結合文本細讀的研究法。在細讀文本,把握賈府丫鬟的獨特處境後,查閱清律、時人記載和英文相關典籍,確定丫鬟在英文中的對應位置,作出譯詞選擇。

三、研究文獻

學界對《夢》中丫鬟的翻譯研究主要關注如何翻譯丫鬟姓名,尚未有人專門探討“丫鬟”“丫頭”二詞的譯法。不過,有少量翻譯研究涉及了這一點,如丁家琛在翻譯報告中指出,翻譯“丫頭”等詞,應保留中文原詞並作注。鄭美善在研究中則批評了音譯“丫鬟”的做法,認為會產生文化隔閡。另有部分文學文化研究探討了小說中的丫鬟地位及清朝奴婢制度。學者們指出了丫鬟較低的法律地位及其在小說中豐滿的形象,和賈府對丫鬟的相對尊重。魏寶華指出,寶玉對身邊丫鬟充滿平等與愛護。張澤琳指出,受解放個性的明清人文思潮影響,小說中塑造丫鬟的筆墨是充滿愛與尊重的。

Paper submission guidelines

格式範例(简体字、正體字稿子都接受)

《漢學》期刊投稿文章格式詳述:

1. 字體和行距

文章標題中文應採用20號加粗宋體,英文應採用20號Times New Roman加粗字體,中文英文標題分兩行寫出,並居中顯示,前後空一行;副標題中文應採用四號加粗宋體,英文應採用四號Times New Roman加粗字體,中文英文標題分兩行寫出,並居中顯示,前後空一行;作者名字,所在大學,所在國家或地區這一資訊應採用五號宋體,並居中顯示。

文章摘要部分,“摘要”二字應採用五號加粗宋體,左對齊,摘要內容應採用五號宋體,寫在“摘要:”二字下一行,中文摘要需300字左右。英文摘要中,“Abstract”這一單詞應採用五號Times New Roman加粗字體,左對齊,英文摘要內容應採用五號Times New Roman字體,寫在“Abstract:”下一行,英文摘要需250詞左右。

正文部分,一級標題應採用四號加粗宋體,二級標題應採用小四號加粗宋體,上方空一行,三級標題應採用小四號宋體,其他正文內容中,中文應採用小四號宋體,英文應採用小四號Times New Roman字體,首行縮進2字元,行距統一為:多倍行距1.2倍。

註腳部分,中文應採用五號宋體,英文應採用五號Times New Roman字體。

文章應選用A5版面,頁邊距為上下左右各2cm。

2. 文中引文以及註腳

當正文中出現引文時,應單獨引用,採用五號楷體,前後空出一段,每行縮進4字元。在引文最後應當用括弧標明作者名字,年份,引用文章以及頁碼,不同項間用英文逗號以及英文空格銜接。

請將作者相關研究方向,聯繫方式,是否為基金專案論文等資訊作為註腳於封面頁標明,如論文為基金專案下論文,請按照 “基金專案:專案名稱或編號” 的格式在註腳寫明,註腳部分只需要注明需要解釋的欄位,無需將參考文獻添加在註腳部分。

3.參考文獻

“參考文獻”四字應另起一頁,採用四號宋體,左對齊顯示,文獻按照英文首字母或拼音首字母排序,書籍以及期刊名應用斜體表示。參考文獻第一行左對齊,第二行應首行凸排2字元。

引用文獻為書籍應採用的格式:

一、相同之處

(一)出身

薛寶釵出生貴族家庭, 是封建社會的上層階級。 薛家是家資百萬、 巨富無比的皇商,“護官符” 上雲:“豐年好大雪(薛),珍珠如土金如鐵!”。父親是事故圓滑、精通經營、學識淵博的商人,母親薛姨媽是京營節度使王子騰的妹妹。 家裡開了幾家當鋪,金陵那邊有房子有地。

梅蘭妮的家庭情況,雖然書中並沒有直接提及,但能推測出梅蘭妮的家庭也是相當富貴的。當斯嘉麗向阿希禮表白遭到拒絕之後,斯嘉麗賭氣嫁給了梅蘭妮的哥哥查理斯。 斯嘉麗的父親吉羅德對這樁婚姻相當滿意。

吉羅德曾想過如果女兒嫁給這哥兒倆(塔爾頓家兄弟)中的一個,這一來兩家莊園就可以並在一起了。(瑪格麗特·米切爾, 1999, 飄, 上海:譯林出版社)

吉羅德希望斯嘉麗嫁的人門當戶對,雖然斯嘉麗沒嫁給塔爾頓家兄弟,但對查理斯相當滿意,只能說明查理斯也是貴族社會。無疑,玫蘭家境也是相當富貴的。

(二)學識

薛寶釵天資聰穎,博學廣攬。她博學多才,琴棋書畫,人情世故樣樣精通。她對醫學也有廣泛涉獵,就連 “雜學”也有所涉獵。當寶玉作詩時,她告訴寶玉將“綠玉”改為“綠蠟”,並引經據典,告訴他改的理由。作畫時,她對於如何佈局、如何設景等講得頭頭是道。 所以寶釵有“雅俗共賞的花王”、“師傅”、“通人”的美名。吉羅德曾告訴斯嘉麗 “相似的人結婚才能幸福”。阿希禮和梅蘭妮是相似的人,他們有共同的愛好:詩、書、油畫、音樂等。 阿希禮談到的東西,梅蘭妮都能說出自己的見解。 梅蘭妮才華橫溢,是阿希禮的精神支柱。

(三)性格特徵

薛寶釵與梅蘭妮的性格不同,但也有一些相似之處。兩人雖未女子,卻都很堅強、勇敢,且人緣好。薛寶釵堅強面對丈夫的失蹤,縱使很悲傷,也不表現出來,還一直勸導他人。梅蘭妮在面對北方佬時的鎮靜自若,連斯嘉麗都不如。薛寶釵在賈府身受上層人物(賈母,王夫人)、下層人物(僕人)和平輩人(史湘雲,岫煙)的喜歡,梅蘭妮也是如此,受到瑞特、亞曆克斯、僕人等人的喜歡。

三、不同之處

(一)外貌特徵

薛寶釵皮膚白皙,體態豐腴,常被比作“雍容華貴的牡丹花”和“傾國傾城的楊貴妃”。

Explanations to prepare ppt and texts:

Every student preparing a topic in class is asked to find an original Chinese text sample, like a job application letter, official letter etc. (they are all available on the internet), create a link under the respective session with a second page (the wiki admin can help with it), copy the full text there (if the text is too long, you will have to be split it in several websites (the wiki admin can help) or you simply select only extracts from it which you find worth reading. Please also select a part of the text, which the wiki admin can split again into small sections, each student only needs to read a small section and write a short summary in English beneath. If it is a short text like an official letter, as a homework you can also ask the fellow students to find another example for such a letter in the internet and paste it into their own homework section. (The Wiki admin then makes another link from the course homepage to the homework page.)

The presentations should be in powerpoint format, be uploaded to the course website in advance and should introduce the sort of texts, explain its characteristics and special phrases used etc. You should also take some examples from the text and explain them, so that the fellow students understand your approach to the text. This presentation can be about 15 minutes. I will continue to present the text after the powerpoint, but the student should stay in front in order to develop the teaching sometimes in dialogue form. For the 2nd part of the class, the presenting student should prepare something interactive, e.g. hand out paper sheets with short text samples and ask fellow students to translate it or to rewrite it etc. You should also use mentimeter.com to make a short survey or get feedback etc.

The students cannot do much for homework in just a few days. They can find a sample text in the internet, they can translate one or write one by themselves. Please encourage each fellow student beneath to correct or comment on the homework of the fellow student above. Don't forget that you still have other courses and homework. So please just provide short examples to read for the students and only a simple task, the students should actually find, read, alter, translate or write to understand the sort of text.

Every student should do a presentation. If there are less sessions than students, two students will have to present in the same session. However, every student should still have his/her own topic. In some sessions, there are more works in one session, and then two students can pick one work each.
