Abstract: Junshan Island, also known as Dongting Mountain and Xiang Mountain, is a small island in Dongting Lake, Hunan Province, facing the historical Yueyang Tower. It covers an area of 0.96 square kilometers and is composed of seventy-two peaks, earning its reputation as the eleventh blessed land in Daoist texts and a national key scenic area with a 5A rating. The island is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, including ancient wells, platforms, pavilions, and temples, as well as historical figures like Qu Yuan and the two imperial concubines. It is also famous for its natural beauty, offering a respite from summer heat and a paradise for tourists and tea lovers, with its renowned Junshan Yinzhen tea. The island's sustainable development and protection efforts aim to balance economic growth with ecological preservation.

Introduction Junshan Island, located in Junshan District, Yueyang City, Hunan Province, was once called Dongting Mountain, Xiang Mountain, and Youyuan Mountain. It is a small island in the Dongting Lake and faces the famous Yueyang Tower across the lake. With a total area of 0.96 square kilometers, Junshan Island, consisting of seventy-two peaks of various sizes, was listed as the world's eleventh holy land in the “Taoist book”. It is now a national key scenic spot and national 5A level tourist area, small but exquisite, surrounded by water on all sides, with beautiful scenery and fresh air, which is definitely a summer resort.

Scenic Spots and Historical Sites Junshan Island is rich in scenic spots and historical sites, with a profound cultural heritage. It is said that there are 5 wells, 4 terraces, 36 pavilions, and 48 temples. Through the ages, scholars and literati have written essays and poems or inscribed these on stones, all centered around the "wonder," "miniature," "ingenuity," "seclusion," and "antiquity" of Junshan Island. Many sites are on the island, i.e. the earliest inscriptions on precipices ever discovered in China, nebulae drawing on rocks, neolithic site, the seal of shutting the mountain from the first emperor Qin, the Dragon-Shooting Platform of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty, the flying bell from the peasant uprising of the Song Dynasty, witnesses to great love including mottled bamboo, the tomb of Emperor Shun's two concubines E Huang and Nv Ying, Liu Yi Well, and so on. Every historic site is a profound history story, and every story is a distant memory. Especially since the Tang Dynasty, many literati such as Li Bai, Du Fu, Huang Tingjian, Xin Qiji, and Zhang Zhidong have landed on Junshan Island to enjoy its scenery and express their emotions, leaving behind countless eternal masterpieces. The verse “From distance, hill and water of Lake Dongting are green; they are like lime conch in the middle of a silvery platter” in Viewing Lake Dongting written by Liu Yuxi, have made Junshan Island even more famous and widely known among the public. In addition, Junshan island is densely forested with ancient trees and exquisitely tall bamboo towering into the sky. There are more than 20 varieties of famous bamboo, including the magical and romantic spotted bamboo that grows around the tomb of Emperor Shun's two concubines E Huang and Nv Ying. Junshan Island boasts stunning natural scenery, with unique flowers and plants to admire in spring, the vast Dongting Lake to observe in summer, fishing songs and enchanting moon to enjoy in autumn, and wetland migratory birds to watch in winter. Junshan is a paradise for tourism and vacationing, as well as an ideal place for summer retreat and leisure. (Yueyang Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, 2024) Since it opened to the public, many national leaders have personally visited Junshan and have given it high praise.

Junshan Silver Needle Tea Junshan Island is located at the center of Dongting Lake, surrounded by water on all sides with a pleasant climate. The island features a hilly terrain with undulating contours. The terrain is undulating, with plentiful vegetation, including a variety of trees, flowers, and precious medicinal herbs. The soil on the island is acid red soil, which is suitable for the growth of tea plants. As a result, Junshan Island is known for its high-quality teas, with Junshan silver needle tea being the most renowned, honored as one of "China's Top Ten Famous Teas." It is often said that "great teas originate from scenic landscapes and pristine environments," and this saying is absolutely true. The tea grows on Junshan Island, with a shape as fine as a needle, hence the name is Junshan silver needle tea. The tea soup presents a vibrant green tint, a fresh taste, a soft and refined aroma, with high health value, which is deeply loved by tea enthusiasts.

Causes of Formation Ancient people mostly praised the beauty of Junshan Island, but rarely explored the reason for the formation of the island. Even when occasionally mentioned, it was inevitably exaggerated with romantic stories. The Tang Dynasty poet Fang Gan described Junshan as a huge stone blown down from the Kunlun Mountains by the sea wind, which was merely an exaggeration using of legendary stories to express excessive praise, and not a literal statement. As a matter of fact, the formation of Junshan Island is indeed closely related to the action of the wind. The base of Dongting Lake is igneous rock, which subsided during crustal movements to form a lake basin, then gathering water into a lake. As a result of the sustained effects of the wind, sediments continuously deposited and consolidated into rock, eventually emerging above the water surface, forming an island in the lake. (Ma Zhifei, 2022)

Sustainable Development and Conservation Junshan District aims to create a comprehensive tourism destination by integrating four elements of agriculture, culture, tourism, and sports. This integration not only enhances the tourism experience but also strengthens the local cultural appeal, contributing to the development of a distinctive and high-quality Junshan, with the ultimate goal of enriching and benefiting the local population. (Xu Yaping, 2021) For instance, Junshan District has built a theme park called Happy World of Dongting Lake. It is the first recreational theme park in Yueyang City. As new tourism products, recreational theme parks bring tourists comprehensive recreation experience and new tourism experience. (Tao W & Xin T, 2018) Besides, Junshan District has organized a variety of festive activities, such as "YueYang·JunShan The Marathon With The Best Yangtze River View", "International Bird Watching Festival", and "YueYang Wild Lotus Tourism and Culture Festival", to increase the visibility and reputation of its tourism brand. While developing tourism, Junshan District also places great emphasis on ecological protection and sustainable development, which includes the conservation and management of the Dong Dongting Lake wetlands, as well as controlling the environmental impact of tourism activities. The goal of Junshan District is to achieve a win-win situation for economic development and ecological conservation.
