INTRODUCTION AND TOPICS

The stunning economical miracle in China reminds many of the German economical miracle after World War II. However, China’s rise with almost 10% annual growth rate lasts already more than 30 years. This is certainly a unique achievement in both, global and historical scales. Mao Zedong has called China “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics”. Today, some people refer to the Chinese way as the Beijing Consensus.

For a long time, it looked like that there were only two, but rivaling ways of development: Capitalism or Communism. Many saw the end of the Cold War as the end of the competition of systems of societal organization. However, China has shown world history that there is another, a third way of development: A Manchester Capitalist Economy with some regulation and without the liberties known from other Developed Countries.

The conference will reflect the historical development of China, both in contrast to her own history and international history. Speakers will highlight aspects of society, economy, politics, culture, education, environment, corruption, power abuse, democratization and freedom. It will give an outlook on possible future developments.
