一、生平
葛瑞汉 ( Angus Charles Graham,1919-1991 )英国汉学家, 1919年7月出生于英国威尔士的珀纳思(Penarth),他是格雷厄姆夫妇(Charles Harold and Mabelle Graham)两个儿子中的长子。其父原先经营煤炭生意,1925年到马来亚(现在的马来西亚)从事橡胶种植业,直至1928年因患疟疾病逝。
1932─1937年葛瑞汉在希罗普郡的埃尔斯大学学习,后在牛津大学神学院学习神学并于1940年毕业。随后他参加皇家空军,1944─1945年接受日语训练,被派到马来西亚、泰国等地担任日语翻译,退役时军阶为中尉。
1946年葛瑞汉进入伦敦大学的东方及非洲研究院(S.O.A.S.),选修汉语。1949年获文学学士学位,毕业后留校担任古汉语讲师。1953年他取得哲学博士学位。
1955年葛瑞汉和张得保(Der Pao Chang) 结婚, 1964年生一女儿, 取名晨羲(Dawn)。葛瑞汉夫人拥有一家进出口公司并自任经理,女儿承继父业在伦敦大学东方及非洲研究院研究汉学,母女俩现住诺丁汉郡。
尽管葛瑞汉久居伦敦,但他热心漫步讲学,周游世界。他以访问学者、客座教授的身份讲学于香港大学(1954─1955年)、耶鲁大学(1966─1967年)、密歇根大学(1970年)、康耐尔人文学会(1972─1973年)、 新加坡东亚哲学研究所(1984─1986年)、台湾清华大学(1987年)、布朗大学(1988年)和夏威夷大学(1989─1990年)。
1971年葛瑞汉取得伦敦大学东方及非洲研究院古汉语教授并保持这个位置十三年之久,直到告老退休。他于1981年光荣的当选英国(文史哲)研究院院士。
1991年葛瑞汉因病逝世,享年72岁。
二、学术研究
葛瑞汉在其学术生涯中,不仅研究哲学本身,而且对中国哲学进行了开创性的研究,同时对中国语言、中国哲学和诗词有较多的精品译作。在他人生的最后十年又返回到新儒学的研究,他的哲学研究经历影响了他对新儒学问题认识上的演变。
葛瑞汉对中国哲学的特点有较深切的理解,他认为:中国人看待世界的思维和方式倾向于相互依存,而不是各自独立;整中有分,而不是部分的集合;对立的双方相互补充,而不是相互矛盾;万物是变化的(周而复始的循环变化,并非向前发展),而不是静止的;看重物之用,而不是物之质;关心相互感应,而不是因果关系。他还认为:中国思想史上,有两个伟大的时期,一个是东周战国时期,另一个是宋代,并高度评价宋代理学。
葛瑞汉对宋代理学家程颢(程明道)、程颐(程伊川)的哲学很有研究,他的开山之作《中国的两位哲学家——二程兄弟的新儒学》一书,对新儒学领域最核心的两位哲学家的思想作了全面系统的论述和严密的分析,这在该领域的文献中是绝无仅有的。该书以西方学者特有的视角,对二程的理学思想作了精湛的研究。其特点有三:一是分疏了程颐与程颢的理学范畴体系,阐明了这些范畴的意蕴;二是考究了程颐与程颢哲学的源流,揭示了两种哲学的特质;三是比较了中国与欧洲哲学之异同,突出了二者之“异”。这部书不仅对新儒学研究领域的拓展和变化起到了推动作用,而且作为研究北宋时期程颢程颐两位大哲思想的最清晰、最全面的英文文献,至今仍然保持着其现实意义和实用价值。它为那些初次遇到中国十一世纪哲学思想挑战的学子们标明了起点,也是致力于这一思想领域研究的东西方学者们的必读文献。这部书的初稿,是葛瑞汉1953年6月向伦敦大学提交的哲学博士学位论文。在东方及非洲研究院(School of Oriental and African Studies)的资助下, 葛瑞汉1954-1955年在香港和日本游学一年,获得新资料后对初稿进行了修改,专著于1958年在英国正式出版,1978年重印,1992年在美国再版,足以证明其永久价值。特别是,这部书的中文版翻译和出版工作均由程伊川直系后裔程德祥先生(程伊川二十九世孙)承担,他研究二程学历有年所,对程子原著娴熟,译文因得准确而流畅。
葛瑞汉在40多年的学术生涯中,治学严谨、言必有据,为自己赢得了二十世纪最驰名的汉学家之一的声誉,他以博大精深的学术蜚声四海。如此盛名不仅是基于其著作的数量和质量,而且还基于其著作涉及范围之广。他的著作完全立足于中国的经典哲学,从对中国哲学的开创性研究,到对《庄子》、《列子》的翻译,以及晚唐诗的权威译作,全部堪称极致精品。他的《道教辩士——古代中国的哲学辨论》(Disputers of the Tao)已成为关于中国古典思想的权威英语著作。
