In the early spring of 1980, something that could be small or big, ordinary or extraordinary happened in a corner of China’s 9.6 million square kilometers of land. It might seem unexpected at first glance, but expected after careful consideration.

Good news never goes beyond the gate, while bad news spreads far and wide. The news spread rapidly with chilly spring breeze as if it had wings, arousing different reactions among people: some smote the table and rose to their feet; some gloated over and ridiculed it; some fell into solemn contemplation; some lamented with forced smiles…

Because of this, the once unknown village, the 4th production team of Sanmen Li, Shiwu commune, Huaide County, Jilin province, which is scattered in a large salt flat on the left bank of the East Liaohe River, gained a great reputation.

This is a story about five Communist Party members and their extraordinary encounters…

If people had been concerted, there would have been no worry about food. If everyone had made contributions, people would have achieved an early prosperity. But how was the work group organized? How about the group members? People were waiting anxiously.

In this way, after nearly a year of hard work, the Communist Party members of the 4th production team of Sanmen Li, together with fellow villagers, ushered in a bumper year. As the most basic cell of the Party, they had restored the Party's prestige and regained the trust of the people in this small village on the ground of 9.6 million square kilometers in our country (which could not be found on the 500000: 1 map).

这威信是怎样失去,又怎样重新获得的呢?三门李大队党支部书记ー边谈着, ー边陷入了深深的思索。以前不是没有发现过党员们的问题,也不是没有采取措施解决。批评啊,个别谈话啊,办学习班啊,学习十二条准则啊,可就是不起多少作用。这回用了什么办法呢?没有。没用什么办法。大队支部和公社党委甚至没有批评一声,指责一句,可党员们竟ー个个奋起改正了缺点,这是什么巨大的权威力量做出的奇迹呢?是生活,是人民群众,是ー种极严峻又极公正的社会现实。“我们共产党人好比种子,人民好比土地”,我们党的领袖老早就这样说过了。种子是不能离开土地而生存的,就像巨人安泰离开大地母亲就会被敌人击毙ー样。这些年来,我们的教训有一千条一万条,归根到底,其实恰恰是这一条:我们作为种子脱离了人民这块土地。 How was this prestige lost, and how was it regained? To sum up, it is precisely this one: as seeds, we separated from the land of people.

当我们勇敢地正视这种现实,挺起胸来,不是靠宣言,而是靠行动,不是靠旁人,而是靠自己,去克服缺点错误,去发扬党的传统,去以我们自己的手,恢复我们自己的形象,则我们就必定能够重新开花结果,达到我们的目标,就像在三门李这块丰饶而又贫瘠、富裕而又荒凉的大盐碱滩上,我们五个普通党员所获得的成功那样。

When we face up to this reality bravely with upright stature, we will overcome our shortcomings and mistakes, carry forward the Party's tradition and restore our own image with our own hands, what we rely on is not declaration, but action; not others, but ourselves, then we will surely be able to blossom again and bear fruit and achieve our goals, just like the success achieved by our five ordinary party members  in the rich and barren salt flats in Sanmen Li.
