Old Tales Retold

(Old Tales Retold)

von Lu Xun (鲁迅, 1881-1936)

Uebersetzt aus dem Chinesischen.

Section 1

Old Tales Retold - Preface and Mending Heaven

Preface: This small collection took thirteen years. The first story, Mending Heaven, was written in the winter of 1922. The intention was to draw material from both antiquity and the present. At first I was serious, employing Freud's theory. But I could not help introducing a little figure in ancient costume between Nuewa's legs - the beginning of the descent into flippancy. Flippancy is the enemy of creation.

Nuewa suddenly awoke. In the pink sky, stone-green clouds floated. She knelt by the sea, scooped wet clay and kneaded little beings. She continued creating with breath and sweat until her head ached. Then she tore down a vine and whipped the clay - beings splattered in all directions.

With a tremendous crash the sky cracked. Nuewa gathered stones and reeds to mend the rift. The stones melted and flowed like lightning into the crack. Later imperial troops arrived and declared themselves her descendants.

Chasing the Moon: Yi the archer returned home with crows instead of game. Chang'e grumbled about the eternal crow noodles. The next day Yi rode far out, mistook a chicken for a dove, and had to promise ten flatbreads as compensation. On the way back Feng Meng ambushed him.

Lu Xun's Collected Works, Volume 3 - Tables of Contents for the collections Under the Canopy (华盖集), its Continuation (华盖集续编), the Continuation of the Continuation, and And That's That (而已集). These collections contain Lu Xun's socially critical essays from 1925 to 1927, a turbulent epoch of Chinese history marked by political upheavals, student protests, and the March 18th Massacre of 1926.

Section 3

Under the Canopy - Preface

In the dead of night at year's end I sorted the short essays and found more than in the four years of Hot Wind. The opinions are the same, but the attitude no longer so forthright, the phrasing more circuitous, the arguments revolving around trifles. But what is one to do? I have the temperament of clinging to trifles.

Great men perceive three ages and survey all things. But for this one must retreat into the forest. I have remained on the ground.

I live among people and have the misfortune of standing under an unlucky star. At the very start of the year I hit two great obstacles. Some advised me to cease such commentaries. But I would rather stand in the desert, laugh in joy, cry in sorrow, curse in anger - than follow the literati to Shakespeare's England to eat buttered bread.

December 31, 1925, recorded beneath the east wall of the Green Forest Study.

Section 4

This section belongs to Lu Xun's essay collection Under the Canopy (华盖集) and contains socially critical essays from the years 1925-1927. Lu Xun was not only a writer but also an outstanding literary scholar. His A Brief History of Chinese Fiction and his edition of Ji Kang's works attest to his profound erudition.
