Last week one highlight of my trip to ComicCon and certainly the messiest one was attending a performance by Gwar, the legendary metal band. Gwar shows aren't just about the music, they're about the experience: The group is known for dressing in elaborate rubber costumes, screaming hilariously obscene lyrics, mocking celebrities and spraying fake blood and other fluids into the crowd.
They've been doing this since the Reagan administration. They show no signs ニューバランス m1400 of retiring.
I was equal parts psyched and terrified of this show. The band headlined an allmetal party thrown by Vice magazine and Electronic Arts; other acts included 3 Inches of Blood and Unholy Pink. Gwar enjoys lampooning famous people, and that night everything from from Wilkos to Hillary Clinton puppets spurted liquids onto the crowd. As for the performers' outfits, they're pretty impressive: One member wears a brilliant metal mask that looks like the giant animal trap. Another guy named Sleazy P. Martini sports a huge, Elvislike pompadour. And the others . well, they're not all familyfriendly, so I'll just let you Google.
The show was so loud and actionpacked that it was often hard to decipher lyrics. However, as the night went on, I morphed into a Gwar fan. Gradually, I moved away from the safe shadow of my friends. At some point, I noticed I was even pointing my body toward the fluids and actually felt disappointed when they missed me.
About twothirds into the show, James looked my way, saw I was fine, and then disappeared into the mosh pit. When he finally emerged, his entire face was blue.
I never entered the pit take one look at me and you'll understand why but it grew throughout the night.
