Prince of the prom

Trevor Coleman wore a black threebutton suit to his high school prom. Tonight, when he attends Fake Prom, the 25yearold will be wearing a much more colourful outfit.

"I went total Will Smith from the Fresh Prince years," says Coleman. "I've got a neonyellow dress shirt that's way too big for me, a '90sstyle rental tuxedo vest, a pair of purple pants, purple Nike shoes and a bright fluorescentpink baseball hat tiffany free run that I'm going to wear with the brim turned up."

It isn't the formal attire one normally associates with prom night. But that's part of the fun. Fake Prom is a kitschy annual event with no academic ties where attendees can relive this peak moment of high school.

"People like to dress up, people like burberry handbags shop online having a big event to look forward to," says Dylan Reibling, one of the founders of Fake Prom.

Four years ago, he and some friends from Toronto's indie music scene had an urge to throw a party.

"We sat around for a couple of hours throwing around ideas until someone said Fake Prom and it clicked," says Reibling.

Since then, the Fake Prom Committee Superintendent Reibling, Principal Joel MacDonald and Chancellor Amy christian louboutin uk Butoiske has watched the event become one of the most popular scenester events in town. About 150 people attended the inaugural Fake Prom at grungy rock bar Sneaky Dee's in 2003. Last year, more women high heel shoes athenasrealm than 400 people came to the Gladstone Hotel ballroom to celebrate. This year, more than 600 people are expected to gather at Lee's Palace.

Many promgoers have beats pill bluetooth speaker spent months planning their prom attire.

"You start to think about possible outfits around the beginning of the summer," Coleman says. "Fake Prom anticipation is definitely a yearround thing."

All the prom traditions are observed. Couples can have their Polaroid picture taken under an archway, a prom King and Queen will be crowned and the band will play retro hits for those getting down on the dance floor. (Unlike so many other hipster events in Toronto, people actually dance at Fake Prom.)

Having a second chance to party on prom night makes sense you're older, so not burdened by the teenage angst that marred prom the first time around.

"I didn't really like my high school prom very much so I thought it would be a fun opportunity to try again," says Tallulah Hershorn, a 24yearold administrative assistant. She'll be going to Fake Prom dressed in a black dress with some "zebra accents."

The theme of this year's prom is Welcome to the Jungle. The Fake Prom Committee chooses its theme based on what is readily available at party supply store Balloon King.

At Amber Gertzbein's real prom, the boy she had had a crush on since Grade 3 went with someone else, her shoes didn't fit right, she didn't dance with anyone, she broke her toe, then went to a hotel and got drunk.

The one good thing about her real prom was the emeraldgreen gown she wore. This time, Gertzbein, 29, will wear a zebra print halter pantsuit. "I"m really into theme nights," she says. "I'm really into dressing up."

Coleman (he of the yellowandpurple ensemble) is taking his girlfriend, Katie, who will be attending for the first time. They spent an entire day this week shopping at Value Village. She will complement his Will Smith look by dressing up as Hillary, the older sister on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

"She's got a green jacket, this long string of fake pearls and a little black miniskirt," Coleman says. "She's looking for a suitable hat and handbag right now."

Coleman, red bottom high heels shoes who has gone to Fake Prom for the past two years with about 20 friends, says he likes Fake Prom because it overturns the social hierarchy of high school.

"My real prom was so lame," recalls Coleman, who books music acts at The Boat, a hipster hot spot in Kensington Market.

"A lot of the people, at least in my group of friends, were not the incrowd when they were at their prom, so they were too busy feeling marginalized to have a good time," he says. "Now, though, it's like we get to take back the prom." 相关的主题文章:
